fix(hidden-bar): make hidden items work under a full width bar - #976
with a full width bar OmniWM hides the macOS menu bar and its own bar sits over that strip. opening a hidden item there went wrong in two ways on my mac:
items that open their own panel instead of a menu (Vorssaint) never opened. the menu acquisition fell through to native activation, which clicks the item's frame in the native menu bar, and that frame is under our bar, so the click landed on OmniWM
every open and close made windows flash. menu access switches _HIHideMenuBar off while an item is revealed. that takes 2 pt off the display's visible frame (1131 to 1129 on my 1800×1169 notch screen), the display observer reconfigures the monitors, and windows of an inactive workspace showed on screen for a moment. polling omniwmctl query windows: parked at x = 1799, then 924 / 1000 for about 33 ms, then parked again. the same screen parameters notification also dismissed the bar slot menu that was still loading, which cancelled the acquisition, so nothing happened at all
Result
press items our own bar covers (34b37ebf): the click forwarder presses the item through accessibility when any OmniWM window covers the item's midpoint, the same path electron apps already take. the choice goes through HiddenBarClickForwarder.activationCandidate
never click an item our bar covers (5135ea6d): when that press fails, MenuBarItemLocator returns unavailable instead of clicking the item's frame, which sits under our bar
reveal the menu bar only for items that need it (5c390002, replaces the no-op from 887ed395): MenuBarAutohideHold and its tests are back to main. when our own bar hides the menu bar (MenuBarAutohideHold.hidesMenuBar), a reveal resolves the item without menu access first. it takes menu access and resolves again only when nothing resolves, or when the item is about to be clicked and no OmniWM window covers its midpoint. a bottom, side, below the notch or auto hidden bar covers nothing, so its clicks still get the reveal
retry a failed menu read with menu access (2f3c0668): Pixeldish's item resolves with the menu bar hidden but reading its menu fails with an AX error (4 of 4 clicks), and works once the menu bar is shown. when that read fails, the menu now opens again, once, with access taken up front. the session records whether the read itself failed, so an item it couldn't identify doesn't reveal the menu bar for nothing
stop a resolve that lost its reveal or its access (c5a826f8): after the first resolve, a resolve that was cancelled or whose reveal is gone returns without taking menu access, and a click that needs access and can't get it ends without forwarding input. a failed menu read only retries when that read ran without access
keep popouts open when only the visible frame changes (5d70f6ba, 99b92397, 2c236e54): PanelDismissalMonitor keeps the display frames from when the popout opened (sorted, so screen order doesn't matter) and only dismisses on a screen parameters change once they differ. screenFrames is a static hook so tests can simulate a real display change
whether an app's extras exist while the menu bar auto hides isn't stable on my mac. before a restart both Pixeldish and Vorssaint kept their AXExtrasMenuBar while it was hidden, and 8 alternating clicks needed no reveal. after a restart neither does: the extras show up when the menu bar is shown and are gone 2 s after it hides, even with Pixeldish taken off the hidden list. that's the CleanShot X behaviour, so those apps go through the reveal and still flash
Not in this PR
the flash itself is a layout bug: a visible frame change with the same display frame shouldn't put windows of inactive workspaces on screen. this PR only stops the hidden bar from triggering it for items that don't need the reveal. I'll write that up as an issue
an app without extras waits for the locator's full 2 s deadline before the reveal. skipping straight to the reveal when the app has no AXExtrasMenuBar at all would cut that; follow-up PR
after Vorssaint's panel closed, macOS gave focus back to Dia and the view moved to Dia's workspace; I haven't looked into that one yet
Verification
HiddenBarMenuAccessFallbackTests.testAMenuBarOurBarHidesIsRevealedOnlyForAnItemThatNeedsIt: five cases (resolved under our bar, read as a menu, nothing resolved, no items, clicked while uncovered) check the menu access calls, the number of resolves and the release on cleanup. removing the fallback, ignoring coverage or taking access on every reveal each fail it
testAResolveThatLosesItsRevealOrCannotGetAccessStops: a resolver that removes the last reveal before returning nil gets no access and no second resolve, and an uncovered click whose access request fails resolves to nil. dropping the reveal check, or returning the items when access fails, fails it
testAMenuReadThatFailsUnderOurBarIsRetriedOnceWithMenuAccess: only a failed read that ran without access retries, only under our own hide, and the retry's reveal takes access. dropping the retry or ignoring the access flag fails it. these tests cover the retry predicate, the access helper and resolveRevealedItems, not openMenu's retry wiring or the activation call site that passes the clicked key
testACoveredItemIsPressedAndNeverClicked: a covered candidate is pressed and falls back to unavailable, an uncovered one still clicks. dropping covered || or the allowsClick check fails it
HiddenBarActivationResolveTests.testAnItemUnderOneOfOurWindowsIsPressedInsteadOfClicked: a panel of ours covers a point and the check sees it, the panel orders out and it doesn't
PanelDismissalMonitorTests.testAWorkAreaChangeWithoutADisplayChangeKeepsThePanel: the screenFrames hook fulfils an expectation when the observer compares the frames, the test awaits it and then asserts nothing was dismissed. comparing unsorted frames or dismissing on every notification fails it
MenuBarAutohideHoldTests is back to main unchanged
scripts/quiet-test.sh (the suite minus the ones that put windows on screen): 5943 tests, 26 skipped, 8 failures, all of them tests that compare English strings and fail on main on my mac too because my system language is Dutch. CI runs the full suite
swiftformat clean on the changed files, swiftlint warning counts per file the same as main
HiddenBarMenuSessionTests: a failed page read records the failed read and a semantic mismatch doesn't (two asserts added to existing tests), each fails when the flag is dropped or set for every failure
on my mac (Dev from this branch, system style, full width, Pixeldish and Vorssaint hidden): since a restart neither app exposes its menu bar item while the menu bar hides, so both go through the reveal after the first resolve's 2 s. Pixeldish's menu opens with all 7 rows, Vorssaint's panel opens about 3 s after the click. before the restart (same branch without the last commit) 8 alternating clicks needed no reveal and no flash: Vorssaint opened 4 of 4 with the item resolved in about 60 ms, Pixeldish resolved but its menu read failed 4 of 4, which is what 2f3c0668 retries. not checked: the retry itself on screen, since the restart left no app that resolves without the reveal
after Vorssaint's panel opens, it closes again when the hidden bar re hides its item (5.5 s with my 5 s interval, 17 s with 15 s): the rehide guard only counts popup menus as open. also on main, not in this PR

Bug Fixes
Hidden-bar items use a more reliable activation method for Electron apps and targets covered by OmniWM windows, without falling back to a click that could affect another window.
Menu access is requested when needed to find or open hidden-bar items, and failed menu reads can be retried with access.
Panels dismiss when the display layout actually changes, but not when only the order of unchanged displays changes.
Menu-bar autohide behavior is corrected when menu access ends or a full-width bar is enabled during menu access.
under a full width bar the native menu bar sits behind OmniWM's bar, so
the click fallback for an item that opens its own panel instead of a
menu (vorssaint) landed on our bar and nothing opened. the forwarder now
presses the item through accessibility whenever one of OmniWM's windows
covers its midpoint, the way it already did for electron apps
menu access switched _HIHideMenuBar off while an item was revealed.
under a full width bar that only takes a couple of points off every
display's visible frame, which reconfigures the monitors (windows of
inactive workspaces flash on screen when the menu opens and again when
it closes) and dismisses the bar slot menu that is still loading. AX
menus and AX press both work with the menu bar hidden, so menu access
is a no-op while our own bar hides it
the four hold tests that drove menu access under our own hide covered
a state that can't happen any more, one test pins the new rule instead
PanelDismissalMonitor closed every popout on any screen parameters
notification, including a menu bar visibility change that leaves every
display frame where it was. it now keeps the display frames from when
the popout opened and only dismisses once they differ
The hidden-bar controller now coordinates conditional menu access, item resolution, menu-read retries, and activation fallback. The panel monitor compares display-frame snapshots before dismissing. Tests cover these behaviors and display changes.

Thanks for tracking down the flash and the Vorssaint click. The PanelDismissalMonitor change looks good to me: comparing display frames still dismisses on a real display change.
One problem before this can merge: the menu-access no-op under a full-width bar.
It regresses apps whose menu extras disappear while the menu bar auto-hides. On my Mac, CleanShot X's AXExtrasMenuBar returns no value for as long as the menu bar auto-hides behind a full-width bar, so the Hidden Bar menu goes Loading → Unavailable. The full temporary reveal in setMenuAccess (preference, SkyLight and notification) is what fixed it. I confirmed CleanShot X's menu opening with it on 2026-10-10. Native-only overrides did not restore the extras. With guard request != true that reveal never happens under a full-width bar. Could you try acquisition without access first, and fall back to menu access only when resolution returns nothing? Then the flash only happens for the apps that need the reveal.
The no-op covers bars that don't cover the strip.request is true for any enabled full-width bar: bottom or side bars, a notched display with .moveBelowMenuBar, or a bar that is auto-hidden at that moment. In those cases nothing of ours covers the item, so the forwarder still clicks its frame, but the native menu bar now stays hidden for that click. Could the no-op be limited to a bar that actually covers the menu-bar strip on that display?
Smaller items:
Covered item whose AX press fails. When a covered item's AX press fails, MenuBarItemLocator still falls back to .clickFrame, which you've just established is under one of our windows, so the warp and click land on our bar. Could a covered item return unavailable instead of clicking?
Two restore paths lost their only tests when the four MenuBarAutohideHoldTests were removed, and both are still reachable without our own hide:
a failed reveal after the preference write (succeeds = false, writesWhenFailing = true);
an external preference change during access with no policy change.
Could they be ported, starting from menuBar.preference = true without update(hiding: true)?
testAWorkAreaChangeWithoutADisplayChangeKeepsThePanel proves no dismissal with an inverted expectation and a 0.5 s timeout. The screenFrames hook could fulfil an expectation on its second call, which is the check inside the observer task, and the test could await that before asserting no dismissal.
testAnItemUnderOneOfOurWindowsIsPressedInsteadOfClicked only checks isCoveredByOwnWindow. Removing covered || from the forwarder still passes the suite.
NSScreen.screens can list the same displays in another order, which
the frame check read as a display change and dismissed the popout.
sort the frames before comparing
making menu access a no-op under a full width bar broke apps whose
extras vanish while the menu bar auto hides (cleanshot x), and skipped
the reveal for full width bars that don't cover the menu bar strip.
menu access is back to main. when our own bar hides the menu bar, a
reveal now resolves without it first, and only takes menu access and
resolves again when nothing comes back, or when the item is about to be
clicked and no OmniWM window covers it
a covered item whose AX press failed still fell back to clicking its
frame, which sits under our own bar. covered candidates now carry
allowsClick false and the locator returns unavailable for them
under a full width bar a menu is now read without revealing the menu bar
when its item resolves. pixeldish's menu read fails with an AX error
while the menu bar is hidden (4 of 4 clicks) and works once it is shown,
so when that read fails the menu opens again, once, with menu access
taken up front. the session records whether the read itself failed, so
an item it couldn't identify doesn't reveal the menu bar for nothing

thanks, all fair. reworked on top of a merge with main:
menu access (5c390002): the no-op is gone and MenuBarAutohideHold and its tests are back to main, so both restore paths keep the tests they had. when our own bar hides the menu bar (MenuBarAutohideHold.hidesMenuBar), a reveal now resolves the item without access first, and takes menu access and resolves again when nothing resolves (your CleanShot X case) or when the item is about to be clicked and no OmniWM window covers its midpoint. so a bottom, side, below the notch or auto hidden bar still gets the reveal for its clicks, and only an item our bar actually covers skips it. HiddenBarMenuAccessFallbackTests.testAMenuBarOurBarHidesIsRevealedOnlyForAnItemThatNeedsIt runs five cases and checks the access calls, the number of resolves and the release on cleanup
menu read under a hidden menu bar (2f3c0668, new): Pixeldish's item resolves with the menu bar hidden but reading its menu fails with an AX error, 4 of 4 clicks, and works once the menu bar is shown. when the read itself fails, the menu now opens again once with access. the session records whether it was the read that failed, so an item that couldn't be identified doesn't reveal for nothing
covered item whose press fails (5135ea6d): the forwarder's candidate carries allowsClick: !covered and MenuBarItemLocator returns .unavailable for it instead of .clickFrame. the choice goes through HiddenBarClickForwarder.activationCandidate, and testACoveredItemIsPressedAndNeverClicked fails if covered || or the allowsClick check is dropped
work area test (b6ff13a2): the screenFrames hook fulfils an expectation when the observer compares the frames, the test awaits that and then asserts nothing was dismissed. no inverted timeout left
the mutants for each check are listed with its test in the PR body.
one thing I measured that you'll probably care about: whether an app keeps its extras while the menu bar auto hides isn't stable on my mac. before a restart both Pixeldish and Vorssaint kept them and 8 clicks needed no reveal. after a restart neither does, same as your CleanShot X, even with Pixeldish taken off the hidden list (its extras appeared when the menu bar was shown and were gone 2 s after it hid). so those clicks wait for the locator's 2 s deadline, then reveal and still flash until the layout bug is fixed. I left the locator alone; skipping straight to the reveal when an app has no AXExtrasMenuBar at all would cut the wait if you want it
two more things I found that are on main too, not in this PR: Vorssaint's tooltip carries its state, so the cached identity goes stale and its item comes back unidentified (small PR coming), and a panel like Vorssaint's closes when the hidden bar re hides its item, because the rehide guard only counts popup menus
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Thanks for the thorough rework and the mutant notes. Everything from the last review is in. The CleanShot X fallback resolves without menu access first, the no-op is gone, a covered item is pressed and never clicked, the restore-path tests are back, and the work-area test now awaits the frame check. Two things in HiddenBarController+MenuAccess.swift need fixing before this can merge. They are the two CodeRabbit flagged.
Menu access acquired after the last reveal ends can stay held. If the last reveal is removed while the first resolve is pending, resolveItems returns nil. needsMenuAccess treats that as "nothing resolved", so resolveRevealedItems can acquire access after temporarilyRevealed is already empty. The non-empty to empty change that normally releases access has already happened. A late acquisition that succeeds can therefore leave the native menu bar shown, and bar-policy updates deferred, until a later reveal cycle releases it.
One way to reach it: with a full-width bar and no other active reveal, open an app's Hidden Bar menu and press Escape while its first resolve is pending. When the cancelled resolve resumes, it can take access after the session has removed the last reveal. Cancelling an activation that removes its last reveal, or a settings change that removes the last reveal mid-resolve, can reach the same path.
Could you return without acquiring access when the task was cancelled or the reveal is gone after the first resolve? Please also add a fallback-test case whose resolveItems override removes the last reveal before returning nil, and assert that no access is acquired and no second resolve starts. The existing cases keep the reveal active.
A click can go ahead when required menu access fails. The guard returns the first resolve's items both when access isn't needed and when it is needed but acquiring it fails. For an uncovered non-Electron target, the forwarder can then post a coordinate click without having acquired menu access, while the native menu bar may still be hidden. On main, a failed initial menu-access request stopped the activation. Could a failed required acquisition return nil instead, so the activation finishes without forwarding input? Please add an uncovered-click case with setMenuAccess returning false, and assert that resolution returns nil.
Optional, your call:
The retry test covers the retry predicate and the access helper. The fallback test calls resolveRevealedItems directly with clicking: supplied. Neither exercises openMenu's retry wiring or the activation call site that passes clicking: key. A seam test would close that gap, or the mutant notes could be narrowed.
The read retry checks the withMenuAccess parameter rather than whether access was actually held during the failed read. That can cause an extra retry after a read that already had access. If closing that session removes the last reveal, it also adds another hide-and-show cycle.
Thanks also for measuring the 2 s wait, and for checking Pixeldish and Vorssaint before and after a restart. That was really useful. Your idea of going straight to the reveal when an app has no AXExtrasMenuBar sounds worth doing, and a follow-up PR is fine if you'd rather keep this one focused. Thanks for the heads-up on the Vorssaint tooltip and the rehide guard too; looking forward to that PR.
a resolve whose first attempt came back empty took menu access even
when the task was cancelled or the last reveal was already gone, so
nothing released it and the menu bar stayed shown. it now stops there.
a click that needs menu access and can't get it stops too instead of
clicking under a hidden menu bar, and a failed menu read only retries
when the read ran without access
late access: after the first resolve, resolveRevealedItems now returns nil without taking access when the task was cancelled or the item's reveal is gone. testAResolveThatLosesItsRevealOrCannotGetAccessStops has a resolver that removes the last reveal before returning nil, and asserts no access and no second resolve. dropping the reveal check fails it
failed required access: when access is needed and acquireMenuAccess() fails it returns nil, so the activation ends without forwarding input. second half of the same test: an uncovered click with setMenuAccess returning false resolves to nil after one access attempt. returning the items there again fails it
the optional ones:
the read retry now keys on whether access was held for that read (menuReadHeldAccess, set when the menu path's resolve returns) instead of the withMenuAccess parameter, so a read that already had access doesn't retry
I narrowed the notes in the PR body: the tests cover the retry predicate, the access helper and resolveRevealedItems, not openMenu's retry wiring or the activation call site

Thanks for turning this around so quickly. Both fixes are right. A resolve that lost its reveal, or was cancelled, now returns before any access is taken. When required menu access fails, resolution now returns nil and the activation ends without forwarding input, matching main's behaviour when its initial access request failed. The new test fails on the previous head for both cases. Keying the read retry on whether access was actually held, and the narrowed notes in the body, are great too.
Two tiny optional things, only if you touch the tests again:
The !Task.isCancelled half of the new guard isn't exercised yet: every test runs on a task that isn't cancelled.
In the new test, lateBar keeps itself alive through its own resolver closure. Setting lateBar = nil after cleanup() would free it.
Neither needs to hold this up. Approving, and looking forward to the AXExtrasMenuBar follow-up.
Bring the style branch up to date with main. Under a full width bar,
which every bundled style now uses by default, a hidden item that one
of OmniWM's own windows covers is pressed through accessibility instead
of clicked, and the native menu bar is revealed only for items that
need it. A failed menu read is retried once with menu access, and a
popout stays open when only the visible frame changes (#976).
The merge applied cleanly.

with a full width bar OmniWM hides the macOS menu bar and its own bar sits over that strip. opening a hidden item there went wrong in two ways on my mac:
