Problem

After a workspace swipe is released, a new touch on the same display catches the settling slide, so a quick second swipe only finishes the first switch instead of moving on to the next workspace. Most of the time that window is the tail end of the slide, after it already looks finished to the user. As a result, they get the feeling of a dropped input during the animation.

Also, with several displays, because there's only a single swipe presentation, swiping on display B while display A is settling, cancels display A's switch without committing it. This is obviously disorienting.

Closes #953

Result

Same display:

  • A swipe that starts while a forward swipe is settling, or while its windows are being handed off, commits the pending switch immediately and starts a new swipe from that destination
  • The first slide's remaining motion carries into the new one, so the overlay doesn't visually jump
  • A touch that doesn't become a swipe leaves the first switch to finish on its own
  • A cancelled swipe that's sliding back can still be caught in place, as before

Multiple displays:

  • Each display has its own flight and preview overlay, so one display can finish settling while another tracks the fingers. A touch on another display no longer cancels a pending switch
  • The most recent gesture owns focus. A switch that completes in the background activates its workspace without taking focus or the interaction monitor. If the newer swipe then slides back instead of switching, focus moves to its display so it isn't left on a window that was just hidden
  • Overview, display changes, disabling swipes, and replacing the trackpad source still cancel every flight. A disconnected display cancels only its own flight

Implementation:

  • WorkspaceSwipePresentation keeps flights and preview surfaces per monitor. The single-flight API used by the gesture handler now refers to the current gesture's flight
  • AXManager.workspaceFrameSettlement becomes a list, so two committing flights can each wait for their own windows. Settlements already ignore windows outside their own workspace
  • The overlay code moves to WorkspaceSwipePresentation+Previews.swift to keep the presentation file within the lint limits

No settings or CLI changes here, just trackpad handling and animations.

Verification

  • make verify: passed with the pinned Swift 6.5 snapshot (main-snapshot-2026-10-11). Lint reports five existing warnings, none in the changed files.
  • New tests in WorkspaceSwipePresentationTests:
    • a swipe during a committing settle chains from the destination and carries the remaining offset;
    • a touch during a committing settle that doesn't swipe leaves the switch to finish;
    • a cancelling settle can still be caught;
    • a swipe on a second display runs alongside the first display's settle, and the background switch doesn't take the interaction monitor;
    • a newer swipe that slides back takes the focus the background switch skipped.
  • Swipe, trackpad gesture, frame settlement, and workspace park-ordering suites: 227 passed.
  • Full serial swift test: 6673 tests, 47 skipped, one failure in HiddenBarAppRowTests.testRowsListInstalledTrackedAppsAndKeepSelectedOnes, the existing locale-dependent failure, which also fails without this change. Run outside nix develop, so the Fish and Nushell completion tests were among the skipped.
  • Manual check: I don't switch workspaces via ⌥+1/2/3/etc a lot, so I've been testing this with a lot of rapid swipes both in the same and sometimes in an opposite direction. All of this seems fine. In addition, lowering my animation speed to 0.5, positioning my cursor at the edge of my MacBook's display, initiating a switch, then moving my cursor to my external display and initiating a switch works fine now, where previously it would cancel the MacBook's swipe.

This overlaps with #952, which also changes how a swipe chooses its destination. Whichever merges second will need a small rebase.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Workspace swipes can run simultaneously on separate monitors, with previews tailored to each monitor.
    • Swipes can continue from an in-progress transition, carrying motion into the next workspace change, including at configured workspace edges.
    • Previews can be reused across chained swipes, with upcoming windows prepared in advance.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of swipes during display changes, resets, and other gestures to prevent stale transitions and inconsistent window placement.
    • Workspace previews and focus now update more reliably when transitions overlap or are canceled.

Previously, workspace swipes weren't chainable, so you could only have
one pending swipe+animation at a time. This meant you couldn't rapidly
swipe to switch more than one monitor at a time or quickly undo a
pending swipe. The only workaround was setting the animation sepeed
higher to make the pending swipe animation resolve quicker and free up
the swiping again.

Unfortunately, making the workspace chainable complicates
multi-monitor support. For example, should we cancel a pending animation
on monitor A if monitor B is still resolving? To handle this more
elegantly, I made the swipe animation per-monitor, rather than a
single object we re-use when each swipe starts. That way, monitor A's
pending swipes don't affect monitor B's, except that only the most
recent pending swipe will grab mouse focus for its window when finished
(if that's enabled).

Explanation

The description includes all required sections. It clearly explains the problem, user-visible results, implementation scope, linked issue, verification results, known existing test failure, skipped tests, and manual testing.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #953 is the active directly linked issue. WorkspaceSwipePresentation stores flights and previews per monitor. A committing settle remains active for a non-swipe touch. A recognized swipe chains from the destination and carries the predecessor residual motion. fallBackWithoutAnimation commits and retires a predecessor when the next target cannot be animated, so the failed chain does not remain attached to the gesture. Cancelling settles remain catchable. The implementation supports independent frame settlements, per-display cancellation, and newest-gesture focus ownership. The controller changes cancel all flights for global events and only the affected flight for display disconnects. The added tests cover these behaviors, including edge destinations and background focus handling.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #953. AX settlement collections support concurrent display transitions. Preview prefetch, replacement, and capture retention support chained workspace swipes. Controller lifecycle changes implement the required cancellation rules. The added tests validate gesture chaining, fallback, previews, settlements, displays, and focus ownership. No unrelated settings or CLI behavior is changed.

Thanks, Brendan, nice improvement, with thorough tests. One case to fix first. When a chained swipe finds no destination, begin() returns before retiring the settling flight, but flight still resolves to it. A quick lift then runs release() on it, motion.release fails, and the pending switch is cancelled ("invalid-release").

To reproduce: start on an empty configured workspace A with hideEmptyWorkspaces enabled and only B occupied. Flick A→B, then recognize another swipe and lift before the first settle commits.

Resolve the overlap with OmniNull#952: chained begin() keeps the
create-on-recognition fallback, chained preparations use
swipeTargetWorkspace from the chained source, and both sides' tests
are kept.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When a chained swipe found no destination, begin() returned before
retiring the settling flight, but `flight` still resolved to it by
monitor. The gesture handler then treated the swipe as owned by the
presentation, and an early lift ran release() on the settling flight,
cancelling the pending switch with "invalid-release".

The presentation now tracks the flight the current gesture began or
caught, and `flight` only resolves to that one. begin() reports whether
it took the gesture, and the trackpad handler uses that to mark the
swipe as fired. A chain refused for lack of a destination is detached:
no flight, no non-animated fallback, and the first switch still
commits.

Adds controlled-clock tests for the reported case (empty source with
hidden empty workspaces), a none edge, a chain past onePast's created
workspace, and a chain into it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Retiring the settling flight went through stop(), which closed the
overlay window and cleared the cached wallpaper. The chained begin()
then re-captured the wallpaper synchronously on the main thread and
opened a new window, so the animation stalled and the real windows of
the intermediate workspace showed through the gap.

A chain now swaps the new source and destination layers into the
existing overlay (WorkspaceSwipePreview.replace) and drops the settling
flight without stopping the preview. Snapshots for the new layers are
checked before the pending switch commits; if any are missing, the
chain is refused like a missing destination and the first switch still
finishes. Releasing a forward swipe prefetches first frames for the
destination's neighbors, since warm() is skipped while an overlay is
open.

The chain hand-off moves to WorkspaceSwipePresentation+Chaining.swift
to keep the presentation file within the lint limits.

When a swipe on one display fell back to the non-animated switch while
another display was still settling, the settling flight remained the
newest one the presentation knew about. Its commit then took focus and
the interaction monitor back, against the most-recent-gesture rule.

switchWorkspaceBySwipe now records the instant switch as the newest
action, so a settling flight commits in the background instead. A
background commit only marks focus as owed when a newer flight exists
that may still slide back; an instant switch has already focused its
display.

@BarutSRB Thanks for catching that, I never thought about that case since I tested mostly with the workspace switcher's end behavior set to "Open One Empty Workspace", so there was usually a workspace to spare. Fixed it along with the merge from main.

Fixing that issue actually helped me uncover a brief stutter/glitchiness as well, which at root was from (unnecessarily) throwing out and re-fetching the cached wallpaper. During that delay, the preview overlay was already thrown out and was waiting to be re-made for the next transition, so the actual windows would shine through in addition to the lag.

So, since I was separating out the code paths for a new swipe and for chaining a swipe anyway, I added code to the chain path to pre-fetch the screenshots for the destination's neighbors (like a new swipe already does) and re-used the preview overlay so there's no chance for windows to briefly flicker. I also made new test cases for all these issues so they shouldn't happen again.

Ready for a re-review whenever!

Thanks, Brendan. The four items from the last review are done, and the controlled-clock tests fail on the old heads, which is exactly what we wanted. Reusing the overlay is a nice catch too. Re-reviewing a12ef7b turned up three things to fix before we merge:

  1. A valid chained swipe can be swallowed. A chain toward a workspace that exists but can't be animated binds no flight, so the gesture is neither animated nor sent through the instant fallback. There are two ways in: makeWorkspace can't build the target, or preview.replace fails because a destination window has no cached capture yet (a quick first chain can beat the release prefetch). The second path regressed in 73364a4; at 886c298 it still fell back to an instant switch. Please keep refusing at real navigation edges, but when a valid destination can't animate, commit and retire the predecessor and let the instant fallback run. Returning false without first advancing the predecessor isn't enough.

  2. The release prefetch stops the overlay's live captures. prefetch() reconciles only the uncached upcoming windows. That retires the continuous capture requests of the windows already on screen (OverviewThumbnailCapture.reconcile stops every source not in the new set), and the end of the warmup marks the capture as not presenting while the overlay is still up. The displayed window contents stop receiving live updates until capture is reconciled again, and a chain can restart streams for windows that are still in the overlay. Please keep the shown windows' live requests, and the presenting state, while the upcoming first frames are fetched.

  3. The newest gesture can lose focus. Two orderings hit this:

    • With workspace swipes enabled and the default three-finger counts, a Niri column scroll on display B can focus B without advancing latestSerial, so A's settling flight can take focus back when it commits. On main, B's contact cancelled A's flight.
    • CodeRabbit's case: B is released at zero progress with a velocity that selects target 0. Its spring then has zero duration, so B can cancel before A commits. B's cancel sees no focus owed, and A then sees neither the latest serial nor a newer live flight, so nobody hands focus to B.

Please keep focus with the newest trackpad gesture in both cases, even when no flight is left for it.

Tests: please add controlled-clock or driver cases for each fix:

  • chaining toward a valid destination that can't be previewed;
  • live captures still running while an uncached neighbour is prefetched;
  • both focus orderings.

The presentation-level chain tests currently use empty preview item lists, so they don't exercise the missing-capture or live-prefetch cases.

Optional, up to you: keep latestSerial private by moving noteSwitchWithoutPresentation next to it; share the wallpaper image helper with makeBackdrop(). Just for context, nothing to change: a later gesture that starts directly with a different configured finger count skips prepare() and can cancel the earlier settling flight. Main behaves the same way.

brdoney and others added 2 commits October 26, 2026 15:23
…mmits

If a swipe on one display cancelled before an older swipe on another
display committed, cancel() saw no owed focus yet and left focus alone.
The older flight then committed in the background without taking focus
and found no newer flight, so focus stayed on a window its switch had
just hidden.

When the newest swipe ends without switching while another display
still has a flight, it now takes focus for its display, so a later
background commit leaves focus where the most recent gesture was.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Each display keeps its own swipe overlay. Disconnecting a display
cancelled its flight but left the overlay in place, along with
snapshots of that display's windows in the shared preview cache until
eviction. cancelFlights(onDisplay:) now releases the display's overlay
as well.

A Niri column scroll (or any other recognized trackpad gesture) on one
display could focus that display without advancing the newest-gesture
serial, so a swipe still settling on another display took focus back
when it committed. On main, the second contact cancelled the settling
flight instead.

The presentation now records the newest gesture's display alongside
its serial, from swipe flights, instant switches, and other recognized
gestures. A switch still takes focus when the newest gesture was on its
own display. A background commit with no newer flight moves focus to
the newest gesture's display when the focused window is on the
workspace being hidden, so focus is never left on a parked window.

latestSerial is private again, with noteSwitchWithoutPresentation next
to it, and cancelFlights(onDisplay:) moves to the previews extension to
keep the presentation file within the lint limits.

A chained swipe toward a workspace that exists but can't be animated
was swallowed: no flight was bound and the instant fallback never ran.
This happened when the overlay swap failed because a destination window
had no cached capture yet, or when makeWorkspace couldn't build the
destination.

Chains are now refused only at real navigation edges. When navigation
has a target that can't animate, the settling switch is committed and
retired, the overlay closes, and begin() returns false so the trackpad
handler's instant fallback switches from the new workspace.

Tests chain toward a Dwindle workspace whose window has a frame but no
capture, and toward a workspace makeWorkspace can't build.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The release prefetch reconciled the overlay's capture with only the
uncached upcoming windows in first-frame mode. That retired the live
capture requests of the windows already on screen, and the end of the
warmup marked the capture as not presenting while the overlay was still
up, so the shown contents stopped updating and could be evicted.

First-frame-only is now a per-source setting. reconcile() takes
firstFrameHandles, so one reconcile can keep live requests and add
one-shot requests; without it, behavior matches the previous global
flag. The overlay's prefetch keeps the shown windows live, fetches the
uncached upcoming windows one-shot, and no longer goes through the
warmup path.

Also shares the test wallpaper image between makeBackdrop() and the
wallpaper re-capture test.

Cancelling the newest swipe while another display still had a flight
hands focus to the newest swipe's display. Bulk cancellation took that
path too: cancelAll (run when Overview opens) could move focus during
teardown, and cancelling a disconnected display's flights could hand
focus to the display being removed, leaving the newest-gesture owner on
a missing display.

Bulk cancellation now skips the focus hand-off. When the newest
gesture's display disconnects, ownership moves to the newest surviving
flight, so its switch takes focus when it commits.

isCurrent(_:) moves to the chaining extension to keep the presentation
file within the lint limits.

Tests/OmniWMTests/WorkspaceSwipePresentationTests.swift: 1

537-586: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift

Drive the failed-chain fallback through the handler, or stop the test from performing that fallback itself.

assertChainFellBack calls controller.workspaceNavigationHandler.switchWorkspaceBySwipe(isNext: true, monitorId: monitor.id) before its final workspace assertion. The two failed-chain tests therefore pass after the test performs the navigation. If handleWorkspaceSwipeFrame or finalizeWorkspaceSwipe stopped calling switchWorkspaceBySwipe after a failed begin or release, these tests would still pass. Neither test sends frames through MouseEventHandler.receiveTapGestureEvent, so the name "CommitsAndFallsBackToAnInstantSwitch" describes behavior the test does not exercise.

Add a handler-level case. Send the chained gesture frames through receiveTapGestureEvent, then assert that the workspace changes from the committed predecessor destination. Keep the helper's pre-navigation checks, which remain meaningful.

@BarutSRB Alright, ready for a re-review again. The PR has grown a lot, so also wanted to drop a quick list of what's changed since the original PR description to help you.

Merging in #952

  • Chained swipes use the same edge-behavior lookup as fresh swipes (swipeTargetWorkspace from the chained source), including onePast's create-on-recognition fallback

Chaining behavior

  • Refused chains are detached (886c298b): The trackpad handler now only treats a swipe as handled by the presentation when begin() says so, and flight only resolves to the flight the current gesture began or caught. A chain with no destination no longer takes over the settling flight, so an early lift can't cancel the pending switch
  • Chains reuse the overlay (73364a47): Performance improvements; A chain swaps the new layers into the existing overlay window instead of closing and reopening it, so the cached wallpaper isn't unnecessarily re-captured on the main thread (causing perf issues) and the real windows don't flash through mid-chain
  • A valid chain is never dropped (62fde902): Chains are only refused at real navigation edges (none, past onePast's new workspace, or no occupied neighbor with empty workspaces hidden). If the destination exists but can't be animated (a window without a cached capture yet, or a workspace makeWorkspace can't build), the pending switch commits and the instant fallback switches from there
  • Prefetching keeps the overlay live (73364a47, 37f58f53): Releasing a forward swipe prefetches first frames for the destination's neighbors, so a chain usually finds its captures ready. OverviewThumbnailCapture.reconcile gained a firstFrameHandles: parameter so one reconcile can keep live requests and add one-shot ones. The shown windows keep streaming and the capture stays presenting while the overlay is up. Without the new parameter, behavior matches the old global first-frame flag.

Focus across displays

The "most recent gesture owns focus" rule is now tracked explicitly: the presentation records the newest gesture's display alongside its serial.

  • Instant switches count as the newest gesture (a12ef7b3), so a swipe still settling on another display commits in the background
  • Other trackpad gestures (e.g. a Niri column scroll) count too (82ce26c5), and a switch still takes focus when the newest gesture was on its own display
  • A newer swipe that ends first hands focus to its display when another display still has a flight (db1e8701). This covers both a slide-back and a zero-progress release
  • Stranded focus is rescued (82ce26c5): If a background commit would hide the workspace that holds the focused window, focus moves to the newest gesture's display
  • Bulk cancellation leaves focus alone (aa1775de): Opening Overview and display disconnects no longer trigger a focus hand-off, and a disconnected display's ownership passes to the newest surviving swipe

Multiple displays

  • A disconnected display's overlay is released (cbfba007), rather than kept with its cached captures

Structure

  • The chain hand-off lives in WorkspaceSwipePresentation+Chaining.swift, and overlay/display helpers in WorkspaceSwipePresentation+Previews.swift, to keep the presentation file within the lint limits. latestSerial is private again.

Tests

Every fix has a controlled-clock or capture-driver test that fails on the code before it and passes after. The chain and prefetch cases use real window frames (a Dwindle workspace, or the capture driver) rather than empty item lists.

Verification (at aa1775de)

  • make verify: passed with the pinned Swift 6.5 snapshot and SwiftFormat 0.64.1. Lint reports five existing warnings, none in the changed files.
  • Swipe, Overview, window switcher, capture, trackpad gesture, frame settlement, and park-ordering suites: 728 passed.
  • Full serial swift test: 6721 tests, 47 skipped, 0 failures.
