Summary

Terminal and iTerm2 reuse an existing application environment. The environment transfer currently runs env KEY=value …, so variables removed from the captured shell environment survive from the terminal, including proxy settings, PYTHONPATH, and shell startup hooks.

- captured assignments overlay the terminal's inherited environment
+ env -i rebuilds the captured environment
+ explicitly retain the new session's existing terminal metadata allowlist

Keep terminal metadata expansion quoted, preserve empty values, and continue delivering captured values over the local connection. Invoke the selected program through /usr/bin/nice -n 0 so an executable path containing = cannot be consumed as another env assignment. This supplies an unambiguous utility without adding a shell or adjusting process priority.

Evidence

  • Before: On this Mac, the same LauncherLaunchRequest leaves four test variables absent in Background but retains all four stale values through real Terminal and iTerm2 sessions. Four new regression tests fail; a removed BASH_ENV also executes a test startup hook.
After: All five added regressions pass. The same native Terminal and iTerm2 probes both clear all four stale variables, retain the fresh captured value, and preserve TERM=xterm-256color. The original production-code probe also passes twice after the fix.
  • Regression coverage exercises the production connection and helper: Background parity, removed arbitrary/proxy/Python variables, fresh terminal metadata, quoted and multiline values, empty and unset values, removed shell hooks, and connection/helper cleanup. The existing large-payload and exit-status regression remains part of the Launcher checks.
  • Launcher-related tests: 49 tests, 10 opt-in skips, zero failures, including all five added regressions. After restoring the final build from the baseline comparison, the combined Launcher and drawer checks pass again: 67 tests, 11 skips, zero failures.
  • Executable paths containing =: a production helper/connection regression fails with seven assertions on the previous PR head, then passes for both zero arguments and complex arguments. Four real Terminal/iTerm2 sessions also run the intended file and preserve captured values, empty values, arguments, and fresh terminal metadata.
  • Full serial suite: 7,330 tests, 58 skips, five assertions in three failing cases. Four assertions match the previous PR head's known failures in ShellLakeReferenceMatrixTests and WindowCloseFocusRecoveryTests. One additional drawer-hover assertion (ShellWidgetBarLifecycleTests.testFlushDashboardDrawersStayOpenUntilThePointerLeavesThem) occurred once in the full run. The patched and previous-head implementations both pass the isolated 18-test drawer group, and 20 additional previous-head repetitions pass. That one full-run failure remains unexplained; the path reads live mouse-button state and does not call the Launcher command builder.
  • make format and git diff --check pass. make verify passes formatting and lint (18 pre-existing warnings), then stops at the existing GhosttyKit archive checksum mismatch (e248aca3… expected; dd856d4d… installed). Swift tests build successfully with the installed local framework; dependency pins are preserved.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Blast Radius: launcher

This changes the environment delivered to reused Terminal and iTerm2 command sessions. The selected shell's captured environment becomes authoritative, with the existing terminal metadata exception. Reverting the commit restores the previous launch behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved launches in reused terminals: outdated environment values are no longer carried over, while current terminal metadata is preserved.
    • Removed shell startup hooks are no longer applied to launched processes.

Walkthrough

The terminal transfer now uses terminalShellCommand to clear and rebuild the launch environment before running the shell command. New tests cover transferred environment values, startup-hook behavior, executable paths and arguments, and transfer cleanup.

Run the selected executable through nice -n 0 so env cannot consume a path containing an equals sign as an assignment. Preserve captured entries, arguments, terminal metadata, exit status and process priority. Cover zero-argument and argument-bearing requests through the real transfer helper.
