Problem

fixes #1014

the workspace swipe preview draws each window from a ScreenCaptureKit capture over a static wallpaper layer. any window with a WindowServer background blur (ghostty background-blur, and anything else calling CGSSetWindowBackgroundBlurRadius) comes back from that capture as a flat opaque fill, so it turns solid grey for the whole swipe and only gets its blur back once the swipe ends

i probed the capture paths on macOS 27.2 against a real ghostty (0.88 opacity, blur 20). every filtered capture gives the same flat grey: desktopIndependentWindow, display filters with including:, and SLSHWCaptureWindowList with any flag bit. backgroundColor, shouldBeOpaque and ignoreGlobalClipSingleWindow don't change that. only an unfiltered display capture, including one with excludingWindows:, has the real blur in it. numbers are in the issue thread

Result

  • prepare (fingers down) now kicks off one display snapshot of the working frame via SCScreenshotManager. it leaves out windows the surface registry marks as capture-excluded, plus the desktop icon layer to match the wallpaper backdrop. it's captured at 1x like the per window captures and takes about 25 to 30 ms here
  • begin lays that snapshot over the outgoing workspace layer. if it lands after the swipe has started, it replaces the per window layers as soon as it arrives. a snapshot that comes back after stop or commit is dropped, so a slow capture can't pick up the destination windows once they've moved in
  • without the snapshot (no capture access, capture error, or not back yet) the swipe looks exactly like it does now

Verification

  • WorkspaceSwipeSourceSnapshotTests (4 tests): a snapshot ready before begin is used and is captured for the visible frame, a late one replaces the outgoing layer mid-swipe, one arriving after stop or freezeSource is dropped, and nothing is captured without access
  • mutation check, 6 mutants, all killed: ignore the ready snapshot in begin, don't apply a late one, keep the task alive across stop, don't cancel on freeze, skip the access check, capture monitor.frame instead of the visible frame
  • WorkspaceSwipePreviewTests, WorkspaceSwipePreviewWarmupTests and WorkspaceSwipeBackdropTests pass, and the full suite minus the suites that open windows passes locally (6555 tests, 0 failures, 71 skipped)
  • swiftformat and swiftlint clean on the touched files
  • on screen on my mac (Dev build of this branch, horizontal 3 finger swipe, ghostty at 0.88 opacity with blur 20): the outgoing ghostty keeps its frosted blur through the swipe instead of going grey. the trace shows the preview path (renderer=preview action=began)

Not in this PR

  • the incoming workspace still uses per window captures, so a blurred window swiping in is still flat grey. its windows aren't on screen, so there's no display capture of them to take. reusing an older snapshot from the last time that workspace was visible would show stale content, so i left that out
  • the snapshot is everything on screen inside the working frame, so unmanaged windows over the workspace (other apps' panels, pip) slide out with it now, where the per window path skipped them
  • the plain animated switch without Screen Recording mentioned in the issue is a different path and not touched here

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Workspace swipe previews now show a captured view of the source display during the transition. If the image becomes available while the swipe is underway, the preview updates to show it.
    • Capture is skipped when screen recording access is unavailable, and the preview image is cleared when the transition ends or is canceled.

single window and including-filter captures of a window with a
windowserver background blur (ghostty background-blur and the like)
come back as a flat opaque fill, so the swipe preview showed those
windows as solid grey. an unfiltered display capture keeps the real
blur, so take one display snapshot of the working frame when fingers
touch down, minus our own excluded surfaces and the desktop icons, and
lay it over the outgoing workspace. a snapshot that lands after the
swipe began replaces the per window layers, one that lands after stop
or commit is dropped, and the per window path stays as the fallback.

Walkthrough

The swipe preview now captures the outgoing monitor region and displays its image in the source workspace layer. Preparation starts capture, commit freezes the source, and stopping the preview cancels pending capture and clears the snapshot.

The swipe preview can show the outgoing workspace with the preview's own contents baked in when the snapshot arrives after the swipe starts. The snapshot may also look softer than the per-window fallback on Retina displays. Neither breaks the swipe itself, but the panel-capture case should be addressed or verified before merging.

Explanation

Issue [#1014] requires the workspace swipe preview to preserve WindowServer background blur for translucent outgoing windows. prepare starts a display snapshot of the working frame. begin places the snapshot over the source workspace layer, and a late snapshot updates that layer during the swipe. The per-window path remains the fallback when access or capture is unavailable. The snapshot excludes desktop icons and registry-excluded surfaces. WorkspaceSwipeSourceSnapshotTests cover ready, late, canceled, and no-access cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue [#1014]. They add source-display capture, preview lifecycle handling, and focused automated tests. The display snapshot can include unmanaged windows that are visible in the working frame, but this behavior is inherent to the selected capture method and supports the outgoing-preview fix. The PR does not alter the incoming workspace path or the ordinary non-preview switch path.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 4 files.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Capture at the display’s pixel scale.

On a 2× display, frame supplies point dimensions, but these lines request an image with only one pixel per point. The snapshot then scales up across the source layer and makes its windows visibly softer than the per-window fallback. Size the output with the capture filter’s pointPixelScale. the shareable content list is fetched before the swipe preview panel is ordered in, so an exclusion filter can't name the panel and a pending capture could pick it up. an inclusion filter leaves out any window that appears after the fetch
