Problem

the repo has no git hooks and no direnv setup, so format and lint problems only show up in ci, and a pin bump like fff8665 (see #1019) can be committed and pushed without anything local noticing

builds on #1019 for Scripts/check-pinned-downloads.py, so this diff includes that commit until #1019 merges

Result

  • make hooks sets core.hooksPath to .githooks. it is opt in, make setup does not touch your git config
  • .githooks/pre-commit
    • the staged swift files are copied out of the index with the repo configs, then go through the pinned swiftformat --lint from .cache/flake-tools/bin, and swiftlint lint for the ones under Sources (what make lint covers). a failure blocks the commit like ci would. without the tools it says to run make setup-tools and skips
    • when Scripts/dev-tools.env is staged it runs the pin check on the staged file and prints a warning when a download is not public yet, without blocking the commit
  • .envrc with use flake, so direnv users get the nix develop shell on cd. .direnv/ is ignored
  • CONTRIBUTING mentions both

Verification

  • GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL=/dev/null GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM=1 make test-dev-tools: 139 + 24 pass. test_pre_commit_hook.py runs the hook in throwaway repos: test_unpublished_pin_warns_without_blocking_the_commit (404 pin warns, commit lands), test_swift_checks_read_the_staged_content (badly formatted file staged, fixed only in the working tree, commit blocked) and test_swiftlint_only_checks_the_sources_make_lint_covers (staging Package.swift commits fine). the two swift tests skip without make setup-tools
  • mutations: silencing the pin check and making the hook exit 1 fail the pin test, and the previous working tree hook fails both swift tests
  • by hand in a throwaway repo with the flake tools: a badly formatted swift file is rejected (Source input did not pass lint check.), an existing file from Sources commits fine
  • direnv allow then direnv exec . command -v swiftformat swiftlint nu fish gives the flake versions (swiftformat 0.64.4, swiftlint 0.65.1)
  • not checked: the skip path when .cache/flake-tools is missing

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional Git hooks that format staged Swift files and lint staged source files when the required tools are available. If tools are missing, Swift checks are skipped with a warning.
    • Added checks for the availability of pinned development-tool downloads, including in CI. Unavailable downloads generate a warning in the Git hook without blocking commits.
  • Documentation
    • Updated development setup instructions to explain automatic Nix environment loading and how to enable the Git hooks.

fff8665 pinned GhosttyKit to the v0.8.0 release asset before that
release existed, so make setup and every ci job since then fail on a 404
inside the nix fetch. check every *_URL in Scripts/dev-tools.env with a
HEAD request as make check-pins, and run it first thing in the Tooling
job so the cause shows up in seconds with the key that broke
make hooks points core.hooksPath at .githooks. the pre-commit hook runs
the pinned swiftformat --lint and swiftlint on staged swift files, and
when Scripts/dev-tools.env is staged it runs check-pinned-downloads on
the staged pins and warns without blocking the commit. .envrc loads the
flake dev shell for direnv users

The embedded terminal engine was pinned to Ghostty b094a6ba, 368 upstream commits behind main. Pin a framework built from 9ee02ae6 with Zig 0.17.0 as the 0.8.0 release dependency. Its C API only adds ghostty_surface_paste_text, so OmniWM's calls are unchanged.

Walkthrough

This change configures direnv to activate the Nix flake, adds checks for pinned download URLs to local and CI workflows, and adds a pre-commit hook for staged Swift files and staged download pins.

Changes: Developer Tooling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Environment setup and guidance
.envrc, .gitignore, CONTRIBUTING.md
The checkout activates the Nix flake environment through direnv. Git ignores .direnv/. The contribution guide describes environment setup and the make hooks command.
Pinned-download validation and wiring
Scripts/check-pinned-downloads.py, Makefile, .github/workflows/ci.yml, Tests/DevToolingTests/test_check_pinned_downloads.py
The checker sends HEAD requests to URL assignments with keys ending in _URL and reports failures. Make and CI invoke the check. Tests cover successful and unavailable URLs.
Pre-commit checks
.githooks/pre-commit, Tests/DevToolingTests/test_pre_commit_hook.py
The hook runs SwiftFormat on staged Swift files and SwiftLint on staged files under Sources/ when both tools are available. It checks staged download pins and warns on failure without blocking the commit. Lint failures set the hook’s exit status to failure.

Some staged Swift files can bypass linting, and formatting failures lack actionable diagnostics. Address these before relying on the hook.

Add a SwiftLint-specific staged-content test.

The fixture changes indentation and adds repeated spaces. .swiftformat enables both checks, so SwiftFormat can reject the staged file before SwiftLint runs. The test therefore does not detect a regression where SwiftLint reads the working tree instead of the staged snapshot.

Preserve staged Swift paths as NUL-delimited records.

With default core.quotePath, a staged path such as Sources/café.swift becomes "Sources/caf\303\251.swift" in $swift. The snapshot restores the decoded path, but the xargs -0 pipeline passes the quoted text to SwiftFormat. SwiftFormat finds no eligible file and returns success. The grep '^Sources/' filter also excludes the path, so SwiftLint receives no file. The commit can bypass both linters.

Use git diff --cached --name-only -z and preserve the NUL-delimited records through git checkout-index --stdin -z, SwiftFormat's xargs -0, and a NUL-aware Sources/ filter for SwiftLint. Keep this as a pipeline so the correction does not require temporary path lists.

Show SwiftFormat violations when the hook rejects a commit.

SwiftFormat 0.64.4 suppresses individual lint diagnostics with --quiet. If staged code needs formatting, the hook exits with failure but does not identify the offending line. Remove --quiet so contributors can correct the staged file. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
