I'm a statistics and computer science major at UNC.
Why? For stat, that's an easy question -- I like being able to (in a way) see the future.
For CS, I have no real concise answer, it's special because of the journey itself.
It started back in high school, when I first picked up software development as part of my school's robotics team and quite enjoyed it. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as your code finally making the hunk of metal in front of you move (and also nothing quite as terrifying as it violently flailing towards you when you've picked terrible pre-tuning control constants). Definitely looking to do more with robotics at some point, but that day hasn't come around just yet.
That's because for the past year, I've mostly been working on web development, which has pleasantly surprised me as being both unexpectedly simple and beautiful compared to my original impression of it years ago. It's allowed me to build out lots of cool ideas, and serendipitously, meet a group of what are now great friends.
Also, an interest running through both stat and CS is, as you might guess, machine learning. For a long time, I've wanted to build something dominant at cards -- but my last attempt at that didn't turn out quite well (may or may not be because I took the shortcut that time). This time around though, I'm taking the actual road to properly learn things from the ground up -- so my losing streak at cards is bound to fall soon (...TM).
In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, reading a good (or anything better than good, I guess) book, and - as hinted above - playing cards with friends and family.
