I added two class methods to BaseImagePlotter:
_get_cropped_source - crops image in platecarree (regular lat/lon) grid space, returns cropped image and extent
plot_on_map_nowarp - skips the warping, calls _get_cropped_source to get regional map and lets cartopy do the resampling/warping.
