Design Phase

SDLC progress: 0 Start Here → 1 Analyze → 2 Design → 3 Construct → 4 Test → 5 Submit

Purpose

During the Design phase, your goal is to understand the planned solution before writing Python code.

The requirements describe what the program must do. The provided design shows how the program can accomplish those requirements. You will review the Software Design Document (SDD), flowchart, and pseudocode so you can use them as guides when you begin coding.

Deliverable

This phase does not produce a deliverable.

The SDD, flowchart, and pseudocode are provided for you as design references. Do not submit these files in D2L Brightspace for grading.

You may continue adding working notes to your SDW, but the SDW is also not submitted.

What You Will Use

Use the following provided materials to complete this phase:

What You Will Do

  1. Review the Software Design Document (SDD). Focus on the major steps the program will perform and how those steps satisfy the requirements.

  2. Open the provided flowchart. Follow the flow from Start to End and identify where the program:

    • Receives input
    • Processes information
    • Produces output
  3. Read the provided pseudocode from beginning to end. Notice how it expresses the same solution as the flowchart but in more detailed, step-by-step form.

  4. Compare the SDD, flowchart, and pseudocode. They should describe the same planned program.

  5. Return to your SDW and update your working notes as needed. In particular, use the provided design to help complete or refine your processing plan.

  6. Make sure you can explain the planned sequence of steps before moving to the Construct phase.

IDE Features Reflection reminder: Notice how the Draw.io Integration in VS Code lets you view the supplied .drawio flowchart without leaving your course IDE. Consider how viewing a diagram alongside the SDD or pseudocode may help you understand a program before coding it. This experience may be useful later when you complete the separate IDE Features Reflection.

Check Your Work

Before continuing, make sure:

  • I reviewed the SDD.
  • I followed the complete flowchart from Start to End.
  • I read the complete pseudocode.
  • I can identify the program's input, processing, and output in the design.
  • I understand that the SDD, flowchart, and pseudocode describe the same planned solution.
  • I updated my SDW working notes as needed.
  • I can use the supplied pseudocode as a guide when I begin writing Python code.

Help and Support

If you have difficulty completing this phase:

  • Compare the SDD, flowchart, and pseudocode one step at a time.
  • See the Module Two Assignment Wiki for supplemental explanations of the simplified SDLC, flowcharts, pseudocode, and other design concepts.
  • Use GitHub Discussions for questions about using the repository or GitHub Issues to report a technical problem with its files or tools.
  • Contact your instructor through D2L Brightspace for questions about assignment requirements, grading, or feedback.

Next Steps

When you have completed this phase, continue to the Construct phase.
