+# 注音IVS字型規格 Bopomofo IVS Font Specification
+
+本規格試圖制定一個新的注音字型規格，取代傳統以多個字型檔來選擇破音的注音字型方案。
+
+## 傳統多字型檔方式的缺點
+
+傳統注音字型選擇破音字的方法，是拆分多個字型，例如「XX注音楷體一」、「XX注音楷體二」、「XX注音楷體三」…等。這種方式會有這些缺點：
+
+* 同一篇文章是一堆不同字型組合的結果，想要更換字型時，所有破音都得重選。
+* 為了不要產生過多字型檔，能收錄的破音數有限。一般頂多收錄到5個讀音。
+* 即使如此字型檔還是很多，字型列表就被一堆注音字型佔滿。
+
+## 本規格採用的方式
+
+本規格採用IVS與GSUB兩種技術，以單一字型檔來支援注音字型的多音字選擇。
+原則上主要推薦使用IVS方式（Office與Adobe軟體都支援 ），GSUB方式則是為了相容較舊版本的Adobe軟體。
+
+### IVS
+
+IVS是一種Unicode特殊規格，用來選擇同一個字的不同異體字。技術細節在此不多提，請參考[Wikipedia](https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%95%B0%E9%AB%94%E5%AD%97%E9%81%B8%E6%93%87%E5%99%A8)上的說明。
+雖然IVS是制定供漢字圈使用，實務上幾乎只有日本在使用。
+
+本規格借用IVS技術，在漢字的後方加上「異體字選擇子」，去選擇不同的破音。
+
+舉例來說，「會」字(U+6703)本身會顯示預設的第一讀音「ㄏㄨㄟˋ」，當「會」字後方跟著異體字選擇子U+E01E1時，則會顯示第二讀音「ㄎㄨㄞˋ」。跟著U+E01E2時，則會顯示第三讀音「ㄏㄨㄟˇ」，以下類推。所以可以將所有的破音收錄在同一個字型檔裡面。
+
+因為異體字選擇子是文字，所以在不同軟體、檔案之間複製貼上時不會丟失，可確保選擇的讀音不會跑掉。不同字體的注音字型只要全部依照一樣的異體字順序定義讀音，就可確保整篇文章更改字型時，選擇的注音也都能保持不變。
+
+
+由於輸入IVS並不容易，本規格有提供簡易網頁形式的「[讀音選擇工具](./blob/master/guide/README.md)」，能夠輔助您快速選擇好整篇文章裡多音字的讀音。全部選擇完畢後，再複製到Word等其它軟體即可。
+
+### GSUB文體集
+
+由於IVS是比較新的機制，部份老舊的軟體可能不支援。本規格也另外以OpenType的文體集方式，支援讀音的異體字選擇。您可在Illustrator、Word等軟體找到此功能。
+
+每個讀音會被分別指定為文體集1、文體集2、文體集3…等異體特性。在Adobe軟體中，檔案裡會完整儲存這裡使用的是哪一個異體特性，所以當整篇文章切換字體時，同樣能確保讀音資訊不會遺失。
+
+
+然而，因為這不是文件內容的一部份。所以無法確保在不同軟體之間複製貼上時，可以保持讀音資訊。
+基本上還是建議使用IVS方式。

+make_font.rb 可快速將既有的TTF字型檔轉換為注音IVS字型規格的字型檔。
