Direct Download of pdb files from RCSB protein data bank

A direct download of a pdb file into BALLView can be started via File -> Open -> Download PDB in the main menu.

A dialog opens, where you can enter a PDB identifier (e.g. 2PTC). Start the download by pressing the ok button.

The molecule will be downloaded and added as a new system to BALLView's Structure window.

The visualization of the molecule is added to the Representations window.

You can change the representation of your molecule by highlighting the representation, click the right mouse button, select Modify Model. A dialog opens where you can change the model, define its coloring method...

To add another visualization of your molecule, or special chains or residues, hightlight those objects (entire system, chains, residues or atoms) in the Structure window, click the right mouse button, click Create Representation, select on mode, e.g. SAS (Solvent Accessible Surface) and select a colouring method (e.g. by element). The new representation will be added to the Representations window.

Please note, that typically pdb files do not contain hydrogen atoms.
