Problem

Agents run as the same OS user as the human, so they can read BWS_ACCESS_TOKEN and every secret value. A friendlier CLI cannot fix this, because an agent can call bws directly. Hush needs a broker process that alone holds the token. This PR is the first of four stacked PRs that build that broker, per ADR 0002.

Change

A new broker module adds a root daemon, a Unix socket, and a metadata-only catalog. hush list uses the daemon when one runs and keeps today's path when none does.

hush list ──► Client::try_connect ──► Unavailable ──► today's bws path (unchanged)
                     │
└─► Connected ──► protocol frame ──► hush daemon
├─ peer uid/gid/pid from the kernel ──► audit log
                                                            ├─ token: O_NOFOLLOW, fstat, root-owned 0600
├─ bws: absolute path, every ancestor root-owned, 16 MiB cap, 60 s deadline
└─ catalog: id, key, project, note (values dropped)

docs/adr/0002-hush-broker.md the design contract for all four PRs

--dev-same-user exists only in debug builds, so a release daemon that is not root refuses to start.

Review

Finding Disposition Reason
Token check reopened the path, accepted symlinks and non-root owners Fix token.rs opens once with O_NOFOLLOW and checks that descriptor
Socket and socket directory modes depended on umask Fix server.rs sets explicit modes on a directory it creates
One stalled client blocked all others Fix one thread per connection, 30 s timeouts, cap 32
bws output was unbounded Fix 16 MiB cap, child killed and reaped on overflow
Root daemon resolved bws through PATH Fix absolute candidates only, PATH never read
hush list fell back to direct bws after a daemon error Fix fallback only on ConnectOutcome::Unavailable
Trusted-path check skipped ancestors, trusted a user-owned Homebrew Cellar Fix every component checked, Homebrew path dropped from defaults
--dev-same-user reachable in release builds Fix flag compiled only under debug_assertions
A hung bws pinned a worker forever Fix 60 s deadline, kill and reap on every exit path
Pre-existing socket parent such as /tmp was chmodded Fix existing directories are validated, never chmodded
Debug same-user mode failed at root-owned / Fix root ownership always passes, hardening.rs check_owner
Socket bind fails when two or more parents are missing Defer #73 PR 4's installer creates the socket directory
Reader thread leaks if a bws descendant holds stdout Defer #74 slot is released, thread leak only

Merge danger

Door: two-way. Revert this PR to undo it. No data, schema, or published contract changes.
Blast radius: low. Only hush list changes outside the new module, and it falls back to today's path when no daemon runs. With no daemon installed, hush list against a fake bws printed the same rows and exited 0, and /var/run/hush does not exist on any machine yet.

Stack: 1 of 4. Next is hush-broker/2-run.

Changes made by Muse Wonder Full 1.0 via T3 Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a broker daemon that provides catalog results to hush list and hush list --json when available. If unavailable, listing falls back to the existing BWS flow.
    • Added options to configure the daemon’s socket, token file, audit log, and BWS executable.
    • Added audit records for catalog requests, including caller and project details.
  • Documentation
    • Documented daemon behavior and added an architectural decision record describing the broker.

Changes made by Muse Wonder Full 1.0 via T3 Code

… on Linux

st_mode is u16 on macOS and u32 on Linux, so the raw fstat conversion failed clippy on Linux. File::metadata on the same O_NOFOLLOW descriptor gives a u32 mode on both and drops the unsafe fstat.
…ot trip the socket check

dev-substrate runs with umask 002, so create_dir_all made group-writable temp dirs and the socket directory check refused them. Production behavior is unchanged.
Round 3 review: every absolute path failed at / in --dev-same-user mode because / is root-owned. Root ownership now always passes, and debug builds also accept the daemon euid.

🟠 project.unwrap_or writes unescaped client input to the audit log · broker/audit.rs:45

Security · broker/audit.rs:45 · in Daemon audit log

FileAuditLog::record_catalog inserts project.unwrap_or("-") into a raw log line, so a local caller can add newlines and forge audit entries.

Fix: Escape or reject CR and LF in FileAuditLog::record_catalog before writing project; keep each request on one physical log line.

🟠 try_connect_to gives catalog replies a five second deadline · broker/client.rs:54-55

Correctness · broker/client.rs:54-55 · in Broker client

Client::try_connect_to closes a read after five seconds, but BwsBackend::catalog makes two calls that can each run for 60 seconds. A slower Bitwarden response makes hush list fail while the daemon is still working.

Fix: Give Client::try_connect_to a deadline that covers both BWS calls, or use a request deadline shared with BwsBackend.

🟠 remove_file(socket) unlinks an active daemon socket · broker/server.rs:28

Correctness · broker/server.rs:28 · in Broker daemon

bind_listener removes any existing socket without testing whether it is live; starting a second daemon strands the first listener and replaces the socket path.

Fix: Probe the existing socket and refuse to unlink it while a daemon accepts connections; remove only stale sockets.

🟠 serve_connection returns catalog metadata without authorizing peer · broker/daemon.rs:69-70

Security · broker/daemon.rs:69-70 · in Broker daemon

serve_connection calls backend.catalog() for every Catalog request and only uses peer for audit, so any local account can enumerate secret IDs, keys, projects, and notes.

Fix: Authorize peer.uid in serve_connection before calling backend.catalog, using an explicit daemon access policy.

🟠 drop(value) leaves catalog secret bytes unwiped · broker/backend.rs:53-54

Security · broker/backend.rs:53-54 · in Vault backend

drop_value frees each BwsSecret.value string without wiping it; the full JSON response buffer is also freed after parsing, leaving copies of listed values in daemon heap memory.

Fix: Zeroize each value and the raw JSON buffer after parsing in BwsBackend::catalog.

Walkthrough

This change adds a Unix-socket broker daemon that loads the BWS token and serves catalog metadata. It adds BWS execution, peer-credential auditing, startup and filesystem checks, and client-side catalog listing. When the daemon is unavailable, listing continues through the existing direct BWS path.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Broker contracts and secret boundaries
bws-tui/Cargo.toml, bws-tui/src/broker/{mod,meta,material,protocol,peercred}.rs, bws-tui/src/broker/tests.rs, docs/adr/0002-hush-broker.md, .gitguardian.yaml
Defines broker metadata, daemon-only secret material, peer credentials, and versioned bounded JSON frames. Tests check frame handling and secret-value absence from wire frames. The ADR describes the broader broker design, including behavior beyond this implementation.
BWS execution and secret retrieval
bws-tui/src/broker/backend.rs, bws-tui/src/broker/{tests,fix_tests,round2_tests}.rs
Runs BWS with a cleared environment, fixed PATH, capped output, and a deadline. Catalog results contain metadata; fetching wraps secret bytes in SecretMaterial. Tests cover backend responses, output limits, and timeouts.
Daemon startup and filesystem checks
bws-tui/src/{commands,main}.rs, bws-tui/src/broker/{hardening,paths,token,daemon,server}.rs, bws-tui/src/broker/{fix_tests,round2_tests,tests}.rs, bws-tui/README.md
Adds daemon startup and CLI dispatch, token and trusted-BWS path checks, and socket setup. Tests cover ownership, permissions, symlinks, effective-UID checks, and socket-path handling. The README documents token-file requirements.
Catalog serving and audit
bws-tui/src/broker/{audit,daemon,server}.rs, bws-tui/src/broker/{fix_tests,tests}.rs
Serves catalog requests over Unix sockets, records peer credentials and project filters, and returns catalog or protocol errors. Tests cover audit records, response contents, and concurrent clients.
Client catalog and list integration
bws-tui/src/broker/client.rs, bws-tui/src/retrieve.rs, bws-tui/src/broker/fix_tests.rs
Adds client connection and catalog methods. The list command uses broker metadata when connected and continues through its existing direct BWS path when the broker is unavailable.

GitGuardian incident 38176923 is a false positive. The flagged line is docs/adr/0002-hush-broker.md:51, a CLI usage example: hush run --secret "Cloudflare Admin=CF_ADMIN". It maps a secret's key name to an env var name, and no secret value appears. The same pattern with --key passed GitGuardian on #54.

Disposition: no history rewrite on this PR. PR 2 of the stack renames the run flag from --secret to --key, which matches the existing exec --key and reveal --key flags and avoids the detector. The incident needs a manual "false positive" mark in the GitGuardian dashboard.

Create test directories that are unique and get removed after each test.

tempdir builds the path from the process id and a tag. It never deletes the directory after the test. Each run leaves token files and sockets in the shared temp directory. Unix socket paths also have a length limit of about 104 bytes on macOS. A long TMPDIR plus hush-broker-test-<pid>-daemon-catalog/proxy/s.sock can exceed that limit and make bind fail. Use tempfile::TempDir, or a guard that removes the directory on drop. For sockets, use a short base path.

Based on learnings: "tests that create workspaces or filesystem state should use isolated temporary directories (e.g., via tempfile crate) ... and must clean up created resources afterward."

8-13: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Set the temp directory mode in tempdir, as fix_tests.rs does.

On CI the umask is 002, so create_dir_all creates this directory with mode 0775. fresh_socket_dir_gets_0755 puts the socket directory under this directory. That test still passes because only the new run directory is checked. bws_ancestor_directory_group_writable_is_refused_on_disk and existing_socket_dir_world_writable_is_refused_unchanged set modes explicitly, so they are also safe. Two problems remain:

  • The on-disk bws test can pass for the wrong reason, because an unrelated group-writable ancestor such as /tmp also fails the check.
  • The helper is inconsistent with the hardened tempdir in fix_tests.rs.

Add the same set_permissions(0o700) call so future tests stay deterministic.

  • Daemon and custody: Adds the root daemon, checked token-file loading, trusted absolute BWS resolution, bounded subprocess output, and deadlines.
  • Transport and catalog: Adds versioned metadata-only frames, kernel peer credentials, concurrent connection handling, daemon audit logging, and the client API.
  • CLI integration: Routes discovery through the broker when available while preserving direct BWS fallback only when unavailable; release builds omit the same-user development flag.
  • Design and tests: Adds ADR 0002 for the four-PR stack and regression coverage for token, socket, subprocess, and wire boundaries.

Verification: all 53 Rust tests passed, as did formatting and Clippy across all targets. Three isolated probes against the unchanged broker modules reproduced the inline findings; live Bitwarden interoperability and macOS behavior were not exercised.

- audit log: created with mode 0600, owned by the daemon user, no group or world bits, and the client-supplied project filter is escaped so one record is always one line
- server: an existing socket directory must not be a symlink; the binder probes the socket and refuses to replace a live daemon
- client: catalog deadline raised to two bws deadlines plus overhead, so healthy slow backends no longer error at five seconds
- backend: raw bws output is returned in a zeroizing string and parsed secret values are SecretString, so values zeroize on drop
- docs: token ownership wording matches check_token_metadata, and the ADR example avoids the pattern GitGuardian reports

Important

The new socket liveness probe can wait indefinitely on a full listener backlog. Bound that probe before merging.

Reviewed changes Reviewed 36dfe94 against the previous Pullfrog-reviewed head, c1cc927, with the complete PR diff as context.

  • Extended client timeouts to cover both backend deadlines plus protocol overhead.
  • Hardened audit records and files by escaping client-controlled control characters and enforcing private file ownership and permissions.
  • Added socket checks for active listeners and symlinked socket directories, with regression coverage.
  • Wrapped backend secrets in SecretString and successful subprocess output in Zeroizing<String>, and cleared invalid UTF-8 output before returning an error.
  • Corrected documentation for token ownership and neutral example placeholders.

Verification: all 58 Rust tests, formatting, and Clippy across all targets passed. External probes confirmed six-second catalog success, escaped audit records, stale-socket recovery, and backend deserialization, and reproduced the backlog finding below. Live Bitwarden and macOS behavior were not exercised.

The flagged line is an env var name in a CLI example from PR 75's first commit. The value never existed, and the rewritten line on the tip is already clear of the pattern, but the check scans every commit, so the finding needs an explicit ignore entry keyed by its incident SHA. Narrower than ignoring the generic detector.

Important

The new ignore entry does not affect the deployed GitGuardian check, which still fails on the ADR placeholder.

Reviewed changes Reviewed f9b79c5 against the previous Pullfrog-reviewed head, 36dfe94, with the complete PR diff as context.

  • Added a targeted scanner exception for the original ADR CLI example using a single ignored_matches hash in .gitguardian; broker runtime and tests are unchanged.

Verification: inspected the completed GitGuardian check on f9b79c5, the repository CI workflow, and official integration/configuration documentation. Rust tests were not rerun because this delta changes no Rust code or dependencies.

Comment thread .gitguardian.yaml
- bind_listener probes through a nonblocking connect polled to a 500 ms deadline, so a hung or backed-up listener cannot stall a second daemon start; an undecided probe errors and never unlinks the socket
- the live socket test wakes its accept loop before joining, as pulled from review

Important

The backlog fix works on Linux, but the new probe still treats a saturated live macOS listener as stale and permits its socket to be replaced.

Reviewed changes Reviewed 41efb02 against the previous Pullfrog-reviewed head, f9b79c5, with the complete PR diff as context.

  • Added bounded socket probing using a nonblocking connection, explicit liveness classifications, and a 500 ms pending-connect poll.
  • Fixed listener-test shutdown by waking the blocking accept before joining its thread.
  • Added probe regression coverage for missing paths and regular files.

Verification: all 59 Linux Rust tests, formatting, and Clippy across all targets passed. The listener-shutdown test passed 100 repeated runs; an external probe importing the unchanged server confirmed bounded refusal with a saturated Linux backlog, preservation of the original socket inode, and stale-socket recovery. The macOS concern below is grounded in Apple's kernel implementation; no macOS runtime or live Bitwarden testing was performed. The existing GitGuardian placeholder check still fails on this head; its unchanged configuration finding is not repeated inline.

On macOS ECONNREFUSED also fires when a live listener's accept queue is full, so the probe now treats a refusal as undecided there and never unlinks the socket; Linux keeps reading refusal as staleness. A saturation test proves the socket survives the probe and stays reachable from both sides.

Important

The macOS socket-preservation fix addresses the production concern, but the new regression test fails under the runner's normal umask and does not reliably exercise a saturated queue.

Reviewed changes Reviewed 5dca726 against the prior Pullfrog-reviewed head, 41efb02, with the complete PR diff as context.

  • Fixed macOS refusal handling by preserving socket paths when connection refusal cannot distinguish a saturated listener from a stale socket.
  • Added recovery guidance explaining manual socket removal when no daemon is running.
  • Added saturation regression coverage intended to verify socket preservation and continued listener reachability.

Verification: the full serial Linux Rust suite reported 59 passed and one failed, reproducing the new test's directory-mode refusal under umask 002; excluding that test passed all 59. Formatting and Clippy across all targets passed. Under umask 077, the new test passed with the default backlog, but an isolated probe forcing a small backlog timed out after five seconds. No macOS runtime or live Bitwarden testing was performed. The unchanged GitGuardian check still fails; its previous configuration finding is not repeated inline.

The test helper now pins 0700 like the other round, the filler connects nonblocking with a per-attempt deadline so a full queue cannot hang it, the duplicate-bind refusal is exercised directly, and reachability is proven after accepting the dead entries out of the queue.

Important

No new regressions found in a1e8b0b, but the earlier saturation-coverage finding is only partially addressed. The committed test still permits success without observing a full queue, so this re-review is not an approval; no duplicate inline finding is posted.

Reviewed changes Reviewed a1e8b0b against the prior Pullfrog-reviewed head, 5dca726, with the complete PR diff as context.

  • Pinned test-directory permissions to 0700, fixing the socket-directory refusal under umask 002.
  • Replaced blocking queue-fill attempts with nonblocking connections and bounded polling.
  • Exercised duplicate binding and recovery directly, explicitly drained queued connections, and separated post-drain reachability from the saturation flag.

Verification: all 60 serial Linux Rust tests passed, including under explicit umask 002; formatting and Clippy across all targets passed. An isolated run of the unchanged compiled test with only the listener backlog forced to zero passed in 0.10 seconds, confirming full-queue handling and successful post-drain reconnection. The normal Linux run still prints that saturation was not observed and passes, leaving the earlier deterministic-coverage requirement incomplete. No macOS runtime or live Bitwarden testing was performed; the unchanged GitGuardian placeholder check still fails.

Every enqueued connection holds its slot after the client closes, so the filler now closes each stream it enqueues, loops until the kernel refuses, and asserts the refusal happened. No retained fds, no pending-connect hangs, and the duplicate-bind refusal and reachability asserts still run.

Important

No new code issues found in beb0504; the saturation-coverage concern is now addressed. This remains a non-approving review because the previously reported GitGuardian integration issue is still outstanding: the current check fails on the same ADR placeholder incident, 38176923. No duplicate inline finding is posted.

Reviewed changes Reviewed beb0504 against the previous Pullfrog-reviewed head, a1e8b0b, with the complete PR diff as context.

  • Increased queue-fill coverage to a bounded 65,536 attempts and required an observed full queue instead of allowing the regression test to pass without saturation.
  • Closed filler clients immediately to avoid retaining thousands of client descriptors while their server-side connections remain queued until accepted.
  • Preserved duplicate-bind and recovery checks that verify socket survival and successful reconnection to the original listener after draining.

Verification: all 60 serial Linux Rust tests passed under umask 002, as did formatting and Clippy across all targets. The mandatory saturation regression passed 25 additional runs. Upstream Linux and XNU accept implementations corroborate pending-connection retention after client closure; no macOS runtime or live Bitwarden testing was performed. GitGuardian check 115622724996 still reports the original placeholder in 0bfe9cc; that unchanged finding requires remediation through the deployed integration before merging.

No new issues found in e5dd00e. The filename correction is valid for ggshield, but the previously reported native GitGuardian App issue remains outstanding: check 115626162868 still fails on ADR placeholder incident 38176923. As acknowledged in the thread, the remaining step is to ignore that verified false positive through the dashboard and rerun the App check; no duplicate inline finding is posted.

Reviewed changes Reviewed e5dd00e against the prior Pullfrog-reviewed head, beb0504, with the complete PR diff as context.

  • Renamed ggshield configuration from .gitguardian to the documented .gitguardian.yaml discovery filename, preserving the single targeted ignore hash; broker code, tests, and dependencies are unchanged.

Verification: checked the current completed GitGuardian App result, repository CI wiring, and official ggshield configuration and GitHub integration documentation. Rust tests were not rerun for this configuration-only delta.

A failed poll says nothing about the listener, so it is undecided and the bind fails without unlinking; the timeout and POLLERR handling stay as they were.

✅ No new issues found.

Reviewed changes Reviewed the failed-poll fix in 1559939, following the already-checked empty scan-trigger commit ba3057d, with the complete PR diff as context.

  • Changed failed-poll classification to return an indeterminate result with the OS error, preventing duplicate startup from removing the existing socket when poll fails.
  • Preserved existing probe behavior for timeouts and POLLERR, including bounded waits and socket-preserving refusal when liveness cannot be established.

Verification: all 60 serial Linux Rust tests, formatting, and Clippy across all targets passed. An external fault-injection probe importing the unchanged server forced EINPROGRESS followed by poll returning EINTR; duplicate binding returned the indeterminate error, preserved the socket inode, and left the original listener reachable. GitGuardian passes on this head after scanning all 15 commits. No macOS runtime or live Bitwarden testing was performed.
