Problem

About 1,300 comments outside src/ narrated code or covered for a defect. Some hid real bugs. The Fidelity onboarding parser dropped the sign of bracketed negatives. The finance report printed a made-up $100.00 price when a fetch failed.

Change

Each deleted comment that covered for something is now code, a deletion, or a test.

scripts/onboarding/modules/parsers/fidelity-parser.ts parseAccountingNumber on every numeric field; "" escapes parse
.claude/skills/FinanceReport/tools/ReportGenerator.py missing price exits 1; daily change no longer labelled YTD
apps/simplefin-sync/src/env-file.ts persistAccessUrl: exactly one match per key (new)
.claude/hooks/post-tool-use-tracker.ts errors reach stderr, exit stays 0
.claude/skills/compliance-scan/scripts/scan.py PatternRule, AllowlistEntry, per-layer skip predicates
setup.sh one SETUP_STEPS list, one SETUP_DIRS list
justfile -> scripts/launch-persona.sh [group] recipes, launcher script (new)
deleted: tsc-check.sh, trigger-build-resolver.sh, monitoring/alerts.yml,
         .github/branch-protection.yml, hooks test_suite.test.ts, release.yml localhost curl

Proof

Check Before After
fidelity-parser.test.ts fails: settled cash ($250.00) reads as 250 passes, 9 tests
test_report_generator.py fails: a failed fetch writes a PDF with price 100.00 passes, exits 1 with no PDF
env-file.test.ts fails: duplicate key accepted, $& rewritten passes
post-tool-use-tracker invalid JSON fails: no stderr message passes
just orchestrator from git archive HEAD exit 127, launcher missing exit 1 with the FIN_GURU_DATA_ROOT message
tests/integration/test_setup_onboarding_integration.sh: All 53 assertions passed
bun test: .claude/hooks 51, apps/simplefin-sync 16, tests/onboarding 86
review-gate checks @ c91dc53: ruff, mypy, pytest --cov-fail-under=80, backlinks, requirements diff, all green

Review

Finding Disposition Reason
justfile calls scripts/launch-persona.sh, which scripts/* in .gitignore kept out of the commit Fix f1000d5 allows it, proven from a git archive export
Fidelity fixtures never assert negative position, equity, or total values Fix c91dc53 adds both fixtures
Restore the deleted note that Claude Code 2.1.289 does not inject skills: into an --agent launch Decline The claim could not be verified. The sub-agents doc is silent on it, and the test name already states the requirement at tests/python/test_plugin_packaging.py:228.

Merge danger

Door: two-way. Revert this PR to undo it.
Blast radius: medium. Onboarding, the persona launchers, the compliance pre-push scan, and the release workflow change. The setup integration test, every Bun suite, and a push-scope compliance scan pass on this branch.

Changes made by Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code

…CI with code

Delete narration, banners, and dead suppressions outside src/ and fix what
each deleted comment was covering for:

- fidelity-parser.ts: parentheses mean negative on every numeric field, and
  escaped quotes parse.
- ReportGenerator.py: a missing price fails closed instead of printing a
made-up $100.00, and the daily change is no longer labelled YTD.
- simplefin-sync: persistAccessUrl requires exactly one match per key, which
also stops a $& in the password from corrupting the stored URL.
- post-tool-use-tracker.ts reports errors to stderr instead of dropping them.
- Delete unwired hooks, an unread alerts file, a stale branch-protection
record, a localhost curl in release.yml, and a test of Bun itself.
- setup.sh, scan.py, onboarding scripts, justfile: one step list, typed
rules, shared prompt module, branded types, [group] recipes.
scripts/* is gitignored, so scripts/launch-persona.sh never reached the branch
and every persona recipe exited 127. Allow it like scripts/backlinks.py.

🟠 validate_count ›= len(currency_fields) does not verify field coverage · python/test_debt_profile_section.py:292

Correctness · python/test_debt_profile_section.py:292

test_all_currency_fields_validated compares only total validateCurrency calls with the field count; a duplicate call can mask an unvalidated debt balance or payment.

Fix: Pair each currency field with its prompt and assert its validator instead of comparing aggregate counts.

🟠 validate_count ›= len(enum_fields) does not verify field coverage · python/test_preferences_section.py:280

Correctness · python/test_preferences_section.py:280

test_enum_validation_for_all_required_fields compares only total validateEnum calls with the field count; a duplicate call can mask a required field without validation.

Fix: Pair each required enum field with its prompt and assert its validator instead of comparing aggregate counts.

🟠 process.stdin.on(’end’) hangs on terminal input · hooks/post-tool-use-tracker.ts:89-90

Correctness · hooks/post-tool-use-tracker.ts:89-90 · in Session Hooks

main() calls processHook only when stdin ends; a direct terminal run leaves stdin open, so the tracker hangs instead of taking its prior TTY early exit.

Fix: Restore the isTTY early exit in main() and keep the end handler for Claude’s piped hook input.

🟠 get_prices(...).get(args.ticker) misses lowercase symbols · tools/ReportGenerator.py:770

Correctness · tools/ReportGenerator.py:770

main looks up the map with the unnormalized args.ticker; get_prices stores keys as symbol.upper(), so --ticker aapl misses a valid quote and exits before building the report.

Fix: Normalize args.ticker to uppercase before the lookup, or use args.ticker.upper() as the map key.

🟠 validate_count ›= len(currency_fields) does not verify field coverage · python/test_cash_flow_section.py:253

Correctness · python/test_cash_flow_section.py:253

test_all_currency_fields_validated compares only total validateCurrency calls with the field count; a duplicate call can mask an unvalidated cash flow field.

Fix: Pair each currency field with its prompt and assert its validator instead of comparing aggregate counts.

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request changes onboarding, SimpleFIN sync, finance reporting, compliance scanning, hook behavior, and setup tooling. It also removes several hooks and repository configurations, and updates related tests and documentation.

Changes: Hook behavior and tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hook input and command handling
.claude/hooks/load-fin-core-config.ts, .claude/hooks/post-tool-use-tracker.ts, .claude/hooks/run-tests.sh, .claude/hooks/stop-build-check-enhanced.sh
The loader and tracker process stdin through stream events. The tracker revises build-command selection and writes caught errors to stderr. The test runner accepts --coverage and runs bun test tests/.
Hook tests and retired hooks
.claude/hooks/tests/*, .claude/hooks/README.md, .claude/hooks/tsc-check.sh, .claude/hooks/trigger-build-resolver.sh
Tests add loader contract checks and assert stderr output for invalid JSON. The self-testing suite and two hook scripts are removed, along with their documentation.

Finance report generation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Chart module imports
.claude/skills/FinanceReport/tools/ChartKit.py
Matplotlib and NumPy load at module import. Chart generation continues to use the same rendering and buffer paths.
Quote data and report output
.claude/skills/FinanceReport/tools/ReportGenerator.py
The report CLI uses a market quote and exits when no quote exists. The cover separates daily change from optional YTD performance. Disclaimer insertion uses an instance flag.
Report behavior tests
tests/test_report_generator.py
Tests cover missing quote data, daily-change display, omitted YTD performance, and single-disclaimer output.

Compliance scanner

Layer / File(s) Summary
Typed scan rules and exclusions
.claude/skills/compliance-scan/scripts/scan.py
Scan rules and allowlist entries use typed records. Shared helpers apply scanner-owned, binary, lockfile, and glob allowlist exclusions.
History, amount, and privacy scans
.claude/skills/compliance-scan/scripts/scan.py, tests/python/test_compliance_scan_layer7.py
History scans apply literal-scan exclusions while retaining eligible financial-figure checks. Amount thresholds and inline-code path checks use shared helpers.

SimpleFIN sync

Layer / File(s) Summary
Numeric and authorization types
apps/simplefin-sync/src/types.ts, apps/simplefin-sync/src/client.ts
Transactions and account balances use NumericString. Parsed access URLs provide a branded Basic authorization header.
Persist access URL
apps/simplefin-sync/src/env-file.ts, apps/simplefin-sync/src/env-file.test.ts, apps/simplefin-sync/src/claim.ts
The new helper requires exactly one assignment for each key, clears the setup token, and writes the access URL. The claim command calls the helper and reports persistence errors.
Sync fixtures and output handling
apps/simplefin-sync/src/accounts.ts, apps/simplefin-sync/src/dump.ts, apps/simplefin-sync/src/trigger.test.ts
Account error output is sanitized. Credential redaction retains its behavior under a renamed helper. Trigger fixtures construct amounts with toNumericString.

Onboarding flow and data

Layer / File(s) Summary
Prompt, section, and template contracts
scripts/onboarding/modules/prompt.ts, scripts/onboarding/modules/progress.ts, scripts/onboarding/modules/yaml-generator.ts, scripts/onboarding/modules/input-validator.ts
Shared prompt helpers are added. Section-order constants define the section type. Template input and derived data use separate types. Validators export allowed values and percentToRate.
Section prompt integration
scripts/onboarding/sections/*
Sections use the shared prompt helpers. Liquid-assets data uses percentToRate, and environment setup asks for a primary brokerage when portfolio tracking is enabled.
Broker registry and Fidelity parser
scripts/onboarding/modules/broker-registry.ts, scripts/onboarding/modules/broker-types.ts, scripts/onboarding/modules/parsers/fidelity-parser.ts, tests/onboarding/fidelity-parser.test.ts
The registry uses a readonly parser record. Fidelity parsing handles accounting formats and escaped CSV quotes, and skips configured core-cash symbols.
Onboarding test updates
tests/onboarding/*, tests/python/test_*section.py, tests/python/test_onboarding_summary.py
Tests check shared prompt usage, derive validation call counts from interface fields, and normalize timestamps when comparing rerun output.

Setup and launcher tooling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependency, directory, and file setup
setup.sh
The setup script adds shared directory and file-scaffolding helpers, revises dependency hints and version extraction, and tracks pre-commit installation as a setup step.
Persona launcher and recipe wiring
justfile, scripts/launch-persona.sh, .gitignore
The persona recipe delegates to a launcher that validates the data root, changes directories, sets FIN_GURU_DATA_ROOT, and runs the supplied command.
Setup validation tests
scripts/qa/pre-codex-validation.ts, tests/integration/test_setup_onboarding_integration.sh
Validation checks use explicit severity helpers. Setup integration checks retain their existing setup and rerun coverage.

Repository configuration and supporting edits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow, configuration, and supporting edits
.github/*, .github/workflows/*, .pre-commit-config.yaml, monitoring/alerts.yml, config/snaptrade-accounts.example.yaml, buy_ticket_agent/ticket_generator.py, scripts/onboarding/index.ts, tests/integration/*, tests/python/test_plugin_packaging.py
Funding entries, branch-protection configuration, and monitoring alerts are removed or reduced. Workflow and test changes include step renames, comment removals, and small helper updates.

✅ No new issues found.

Reviewed changes across the complete PR diff, with particular attention to behavior changes beyond comment removal and the callers of deleted or renamed code.

  • Onboarding and setup: Shared prompt handling, enum catalogs, template data, broker registration, and setup lists replace duplicated code while preserving the existing flow.
  • Fidelity parsing: Accounting-number parsing preserves parenthesized negatives across positions and balances, and CSV parsing handles quoted commas and escaped quotes.
  • PDF reporting: Missing quotes now stop report generation, daily changes are no longer labeled YTD, and explicit state controls disclaimer insertion.
  • SimpleFIN: Access-URL persistence rejects missing or duplicate assignments and preserves replacement-string metacharacters; branded types retain decimal amounts as strings.
  • Hooks and launchers: Tracker failures become visible without blocking sessions, persona recipes use the tracked instance-aware launcher, and obsolete hooks and runner options are removed.
  • Privacy and CI: Scanner predicates preserve literal-scan exemptions and financial-figure coverage; unused monitoring/protection artifacts and the release localhost notification are removed.
  • Validation: Passed 51 hook tests, 102 onboarding/SimpleFIN tests, 149 focused Python tests, all 53 setup assertions, SimpleFIN typechecking, and the documented report CLI startup. Live provider requests were not exercised; report tests mock PDF building.

Spec fidelity: no deviations. The ask was to delete useless comments outside src/ and fix what each covered for in code. Every deleted comment that covered for something maps to a fix, a deletion, or a test in the PR body. Vendor and platform comments stayed, with proof in the sweep report. Follow-ups are tracked in #227.

Normalize the ticker before the quote lookup.

get_prices returns provider results keyed by symbol.upper(). The raw args.ticker lookup can return None for input such as --ticker tsla, even when the provider returns a valid quote. Use the normalized ticker for the lookup and subsequent report fields.

Normalize args.ticker with trimming and uppercase before the quote lookup, then
use the normalized ticker consistently for the lookup and subsequent report
fields, including error and status messages, FinanceGuruReport, and report text.

Reuse the saved primary brokerage when it is available.

When configurePortfolio is true, this code always prompts for primaryBrokerage. The previous implementation reused state.data.investment_portfolio.primary_brokerage when present and prompted only when it was missing. This forces users to enter the same value again. A different response can also make .env differ from the saved portfolio data.

Update the `configurePortfolio` flow to reuse
`state.data.investment_portfolio.primary_brokerage` when it is present,
assigning it to `primaryBrokerage` without prompting. Keep the existing
`promptWithValidation` path for when no saved brokerage is available.
