Freezing on Ubuntu 24 LTS #3

The current Xlibre version - 25.1.1-1 at the time of this writing - causes Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS to freeze after booting.

Steps:

  1. Create a USB with Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS.
  2. Boot into the USB.
  3. Install Ubuntu.
  4. Once done, reboot into Ubuntu, which puts you in a Wayland session by default.
  5. Log out, then pick “Ubuntu with Xorg” in the lower-right settings icon and log in.
  6. Follow the Xlibre installation instructions on this repository.
  7. Reboot.
  8. The system will boot into the desktop, then freeze. You can move the mouse around and enter terminal mode with Ctrl+Alt+F3, but nothing else.

If you enter terminal mode and follow the revert procedure and reboot, the system will be bricked and the quickest solution at that point is reinstalling the entire operating system. So the most stable X11 experience on Ubuntu right now is simply sticking with Xorg.

I included proprietary drivers and codecs during installation, but it likely doesn't matter, since I only used the Nouveau driver. My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970.
