Icon/text is squished after updating to GNOME 48/Fedora 42

Prior to updating, the icon was a circle and the number was legible. The icon now appears squished. Not sure if there's anything I can do on my end, but did fiddle with Dash to Dock widths and system fonts, which didn't seem to have any effect.

Hey @rhetticent,

This might be caused by the other extensions that are enabled. Can you try to disable some of the extensions to see which one is causing this squish?

The icon is a general UTF-8 character of a Gnome's system font.

Thanks for the follow-up. Negative on other extensions - I've tried disabling all except this one with no change (and logged out/in for good measure).

I also tried it on a fresh install on both bare metal and virtualized in Boxes with the same result.

should be the default font that has changed with new version of fedora or gnome

I'm using Fedora 42 which I've upgraded to, and I haven't experienced this. Let find some time to try on a fresh install and debug it.

Indeed, this might be a font issue. The new Adwaita Sans doesn't have the characters DINGBAT NEGATIVE CIRCLED SANS-SERIF DIGIT ONE-TEN (U+278A-U+2793). Looks like it fallbacks to Adwaita Mono, that is narrower.

I can see two options:

1. Try installing Cantrell font (abattis-cantarell-fonts)
2. Or we might switch this to the non-negative form of the characters (with transparent background) which are present in Adwaita Sans (ex.: DINGBAT CIRCLED SANS-SERIF DIGIT ONE (U+2780)).

My thanks to both of you - these were good hints. I tried reverting back to Cantarell, which didn't seem to have any effect, but after reading up on Unicode mappings, I was able to get it running by changing the line label = String.fromCharCode(0x27 + count); from 0x2789 to 0x2775.

EDIT: Ah, after reading some more, I see I missed a different block showing the larger characters and had just assumed they did something funky with character code assignments, given that the old fonts didn't work either. Thanks for opening the issue on the Inter git.
