Best Practices for Combining Next.js Middleware and API Rate Limiting in Production

I’m currently building a production-ready app using Next.js deployed on Vercel, and I'm trying to implement API rate limiting using middleware.

However, I'm unsure what the most reliable and scalable approach would be especially for:

• Handling edge caching and cold starts
• Enforcing per-user or per-IP limits
• Keeping performance fast with low latency
