Tal,

for Zip, SQLite and the native OS filesystem, the "fs" module might be helpful for testing purposes:

It supports all three (and a few more) using the same API. Of course its performance may not be as efficient as using native tools, but might give a ballpark estimate. It also supports other virtual filesystems such as FTP, WebDAV and even Memory, i.e. the good old RAM disk! :)

This module might be a good basis for initial testing.
