Would be nice to be able to install this in a plain conda environment without pip

We will look and see if this is something we're willing to invest in near term. I see it likely involves maintaining a feedstock repo on the https://github.com/conda-forge org. We may also be able to encourage/support a community effort here if it's something you're interested in.
