Cannot find module '../lightningcss.win32-x64-msvc.node'

tried setting up tailwindcss v4 with react+vite project and getting this error

Node version - 22.13
"vite": "^6.1.0"
"tailwindcss": "^4.0.7"

error when starting dev server:
Error: Cannot find module '../lightningcss.win32-x64-msvc.node'

tried reinstalling and deleting node modules. still getting error. i am following the exact steps from the tailwind docs with vite-plugin

since create-react-app is deprecated, I wanted to migrate to using vite. I am new to this. any help is appreciated

The issue was solved after instaling Microsoft redistributable package. download from here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170

Finally solved the issue by reseting the whole system.

Guys my laptop is rejecting this Visual C++ exe

Installing VC_redist.x64.exe didn’t work, and changing my Node version didn’t help either.
After trying various things, I decided to give yarn a shot as a long shot—and somehow it worked.

I have no idea why, but I just wanted to share this information.

Hey! If this issue persists after installing, there is a known issues with how dependencies are resolved in older version of node (see #17958 and #15806). We fixed this issue for our native extensions but it still persists in lightnigncss unfortunately. Upgrading to the latest version of npm does fix the issue though!

@kreis-kuniyoshi only Yarn works for me too. I removed node_modules and reinstall with yarn, then everything finally works. BTW, WSL is much easier for frontend development.

I use npm ci, and it works, maybe clean node_modules and reinstall is enough

on local, some of these fixes worked, on production [SyntaxError: global.css: Cannot find module '../lightningcss.linux-x64-gnu.node']

Here is my fix =
I was facing the same issue, the problem in my case was expo and nativewind is using the same package which is lightningcss but with different version. You can check in your project by running

npm list lightningcss

This command will list all the packages using lightningcss with its version if you see any version mismatch that's the problem you can solve this by running

npm dedupe
and then
npm rebuild lightningcss

This solved the issue for me hope works for you as well.

I randomly got this error today.

I have been developing my project for a while now, went on holiday, came back and did an npm i and after that my project got this error.

Any reason why it would have been working before and then stop working? (I am going to install the redistributable now to see if that fixes it as stated above)

Also can confirm that even after installing the redistributable and restarting I get the same error.

Going to try deleting node_modules and package-lock.json to start a fresh install
