Google Fiber not using VLAN 2 for new installs #28
Comments
I am in the same market and had a lengthy discussion with a Google Fiber representative about this. Business customers in Huntsville, AL do not get setup with VLAN 2. Residential customers will always get setup with VLAN 2. |
@Alexia I do both residential and business Google Fiber installs, and while what you said (VLAN 2 for residential, native/no VLAN for business) matches my original understanding, 4 of the last 8 residential installs I've done utilized native/no VLAN, one of which later switched to using VLAN 2 after the ONT and Network box were restarted. This may be a provisioning issue on Google's end, but it has been my recent experience. |
It does sound like a provisioning issue. Mine was setup with VLAN 2 and has been a pain trying to setup a router that handles it well. |
@Alexia Google Fiber is no longer selling TV service for new installs. They are no longer using VLAN 2 for new residential installs, or requiring the QOS tags to be set. They have switched from providing the Network box to providing a Google WiFi system, and if you opt to use your own router, no special configuration is necessary. |
That does not to my existing install though. I am still stuck with the VLAN 2 setup and QOS settings. |
The last 4 EdgeRouter Google Fiber installs I've done haven't utilized VLAN 2 coming out of the "Google Fiber Jack"/ONT in Huntsville, AL, and is instead using the native VLAN.
One one of the installs, Google later changed to VLAN 2 when a tech was called on-site for a service call.
I don't know if this is a new policy, or how to predict what they will use.
I'm also not sure that setting the mss-clamp is necessary, or at least I forgot it on one of my installs and didn't notice an issue.
