TRANSFORM, the Software Underground unconference/hackathon moved from a small in-person gathering pre 2020 to an online-only event during the pandemic years.

The first online TRANSFORM had a great showing, with a lot of valuable tutorial material on the YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/softwareunderground. Attendance thinned over time, and in 2023 it effectively had a pause.

As a community, how would we like TRANSFORM to return in 2024? What kind of energy and hospitality are people keen to bring to it?

From Sissi at the board meeting: "We will need to ask for specific contribution tasks, an open message to all might be ignored and leave to the side"

Maybe the shape of the event is formed by the tasks people would be intrinsically motivated to pick up

  • Recording, or live presenting, tutorials and walkthrough demos for their projects
  • Curating "Rendezvous"-style panel discussions on specific hot topics
  • Setting up code sprint / hackathon sessions at conferences they would be attending anyway
  • Helping with streaming and publicity
  • ???

From Matt at the AGM, possibility of holding a prefix event to a larger gathering that many members would likely be attending anyway and might have travel expenses supported for

For example EAGE next year, though not at a scale that Swung might want to be part of, it's due to be in Toulouse in 2025
