Double wide stairs with bridge broken

i have tried with several varieties yet always the same issue. i make a double wide bridge stair and then when making the bridge itself 2 wide, the 'end' is ALWAYS blocked off. likewise i am unable to make ANY doble wide bridges because the 'ends' are always closed off like the sides.
