Paste using Menu hangs when launching the fresh editor in a remote session launched by putty to oracle linux 8

copying a text from windows 11 machine and tryting to paste using Edit > Paste menu sometime simply hangs.

strace output is below. Looks like copy/paste is broken. However it does not happen all the time. So some specific conditions makes it to hang.

The target (Oracle Linux) is running in WSL?

Thanks. Will post if I see if some specific pattern is causing it. One thing to report is if I use putty copy/paste it works. Currently copy/paste hsing edit menu item and ctrl +v does not work with putty. Not sure if we are targeting any fix which might be the issue. I do use x11 forwarding in putty to open nedit so not sure if that causes something. When it hangs, closing the putty window is only option. For now using putty paste as workaround. But seemless copy/paste between wondows and putty ssh session is what is required like it works with nano. It used to work with some lower version of fresh but it does not work now. Hang was more prominent in 0.98 and with 0.99 it is not hanging most of the time.

The target is not using wsl but real server running oracle linux. With wsl putty is not requires and it works fine as i can launch wsl instance directly with windows terminal.

Windows 11 Terminal + Remote Server Oracle Linux 8.10 (Non WSL Instance)
Menu Edit -> Paste does not work
CTRL + V Works

Copy using Both Menu and Ctrl + C Works

#Scenario 2

Sequence to hang
Windows 11 putty 0.83 + Remote Server Oracle Linux 8.10 (Non WSL Instance)
Open fresh using putty
Copy text from Windows notepad
Paste using Edit -> Paste
Use Keyboard Ctrl + V to Paste
Press Keyboard Ctrl + V to Paste multiple times like at least 5 to 10 times and try to hit enter key and observer the hang and sometimes it comes back and other times does not.
Repeat this sequence and eventually it will hang.

Observe the hang and control comes back after few minutes or sometimes does not.
It looks like Ctrl + V to paste takes time and it does not return control.

Putty {CTRL,SHIFT} + Ins or

Here is a workaround that works for me when using putty.

To Paste, use Shift + Insert, or putty meny (Paste)
To copy, Press Shift and select the text and it copies the text to system clipbboard. If I do not want line number, I need to turn off line number and copy.

However I am glad it works. and I can use this normally.

I also noticed the hang when trying to copy the editor text using Edit -> Copy and trying to paste it Edit -> Paste or CTRL + V. Sometime it will comeout after few seconds and other time it will stay there. Even though we can not make copy/paste work from Edit Menu or Ctrl + C or Ctrl + V, can we prevent the hang if I accidentally used it. As stated using Putty specific keyboard shortcuts or menu item works fine. So if it is possible to eliminate the hang, it will be of great help.

Currently it automatically tries to detect which kind of clipboard to use (OSC / wayland / X11 / internal in-memory) we should probably change it to either make a better decision here or to make it a config option that you can control

I agree. May be a menu item to quickly change in case remote server is accessed from different terminals. Earlier version of Fresh was not hanging even though it was not really responding to copy/paste commands. May be a Clipboard menu that displays what fresh thinks in the clipboard it has currently. Thanks for looking into this.

Great. I will wait for the release since typically they are quick. Thanks for resolving. Slowly this is becoming my main text editor as you keep adding new features. My main characteristics of a feature that I am looking in text editor is below

1. Cross platform -windows/mac/linux. I use all three.
2. multi tab support
3. single binary
4. copy/paste support for putty and windows terminal
5. customizable keyboard mappings.
6. terminal based
7. mouse support

I think all 7 are met. There are other editors that have most of the above but all miss multi tab support.

It will be eventually great to have set of keybindings grouped by popular editor like nano, vim etc that users can set in the config file instead of customizing individual action.

Admire your dedication of creating such great free and open source software.
