I don't see in the documentation whether it's possible to apply a lightbox to Mermaid diagrams, nor how to do it.

Note that a documentation does very rarely states everything that is not possible for obvious reason.

Mermaid diagram are not actual images, it's a JavaScript library as well as Lightbox.
Both does their thing in the browser at display time, so you can't have the classes (for lightbox) applied where it's needed.
