Add a logger of some sort

There should be logs being generated somewhere, possibly configurable. after it's added, various error conditions can be logged including where TODO exists in the code

Make sure that the logger normally one-shots its actions (ie, it should try to do what it was told to do, but take no further action if it fails). Eventually we have to assume something works. It could be an option to allow error messages to display to users
