RTX 3090 - Greeter stuck at "Authenticating...", need to reboot 1-3 times

Problem

I frequently get stuck on "Authenticating..." at the login screen. Sometimes it works, but often I need to reboot 1-3 times before I can get in.

System

• OS: PikaOS 4 (Debian Sid)
• GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3090 (single GPU)
• Driver: 595.84
• Kernel: 7.1.3-pikaos

What I've tried

• nvidia-drm.modeset=1 enabled
• ExecStartPre=/bin/sleep 5 and ExecStopPost=/bin/sleep 3 on cosmic-greeter
• NVIDIA modules in initramfs (nvidia, nvidia_modeset, nvidia_drm, nvidia_uvm)
• User in render and video groups
• Reset COSMIC config (moved ~/.config/cosmic to .bak)
• System fully upgraded

Issue still persists.

@Maguos I believe that this is something the PikaOS devs need to look into, not the cosmic devs. Toasty in the PikaOS discord said that it's actually a pika problem with greetd. Ferreo said that it's a weird issue where greetd crashes because PAM crashes.

I see a very similar problem on Fedora 44 with Cosmic 1.4.0, running on discrete graphics (Intel Xe), with the same error message:

Furthermore, I can trigger the failure by locking the screen (so the greeter starts), focus the password field, and press <Enter> key without typing a password. It then gets stuck "Authenticating..." [EDIT: I guess this may be a separate problem. Although it reliably gets stuck, the clear_state error does not always appear]

[EDIT again: I've made a PR #509 to fix the <Enter> without password problem. It seems it is not related to the clear_state error after all.]
