Random pause in saving a file (ESP32 Generic)

I am seeing random pauses of about 1 second, running the following script:

import time


position = 1
count = 0

while True:
    count +=1
    print(count)

    try:
        with open('position.txt', 'w') as outfile:
            outfile.write(str(position))
    except OSError as error:
        pass

    print('file saved')

    time.sleep_ms(100)

... generally before count gets to 100. Using gc.collect() didn't help.

Any suggestions?
