Currently, there is no way to incorporate graphical material definitions (concrete, asphalt, steel, etc.) from a Civil 3D file connection, and the only way it can be done from an OpenRoads file connection is in conjunction with a managed workspace.
Obviously, the Civil 3D issue is a severe competitive disadvantage compared to ACC, but it's also very disappointing to many users. But I feel that the need to source OpenRoads materials resources from a managed workspace is terribly inefficient.
The idea is to centralize a materials definition library - perhaps by explicitly targeting a ProjectWise DI folder, or by leveraging the Components Center, or even by managing it in the BIC Enterprise settings.
Once available, having the ability to publish materials that are modelled in the source .dgn or .dwg file OR to assign them using visualization tools in the iModel would be preferred.
Being able to quickly select logical groups of elements/assemblies based on their material definition would also be a useful feature.
