While this is quite complicated to setup, if newt would act as reverse proxy up the tunnel (fetching the ssl certs) and also as dns server, the sites could setup the dns, rewrite dns requests torwards the proxy and send them up the tunnel. Since you have to go the WAN route anyways, i am not sure how much that would help, but newt could atleast proxy requests to services in the same site locally.
