CURLEW -- SUMMARY INFORMATION
=============================
You are using a full-screen text editor. This summary contains 146
lines of text. To view it in full, just keep pressing the RETURN key.
To return to the command prompt, type the letter "n" and press RETURN.
Full documentation is available in the "Curlew Reference Manual".
BASIC CONTEXT EDITOR COMMANDS
write Write file buffer contents to edited file
quit End the editor session
edit myotherfile Edit a new disk file "myotherfile"
view Enter full-screen operation
Press RETURN to enter the command. If a filename is given with a
"write" command the file buffer will be written to the specified file.
Confirmation will be requested before a "quit" abandons changes made.

FUNCTION KEY DEFAULT SETTINGS
F1 forward half F11 letter paragraph F21 assembler tabs
F2 forward full F12 square paragraph F22 tabs every 4th
F3 forward to cursor F13 outer list item F23 tabs every 5th
F4 backward half F14 outer list cont'd F24 tabs every 8th
F5 backward full F15 inner list item F25 to first line

F9 refresh image F19 centre line F29 window right 40
F10 full-screen toggle F20 right justify line F30 file & location
F31...F37 are initially undefined. For each F-key press ESC once then
the second character once. For F1...F10 this character is "1", "2",
"3", ..., "9", "0". Higher keys are below them: F11 is "ESC"-then-"Q"
and F24 is "ESC"-then-"F". Function keys are redefinable using "set".
LINE NUMBER PARAMETERS
In full-screen operation, first press F6 ("ESC"-then-"6") to get the
command prompt. Press the RETURN key when the parameter is complete.
n Line n in the file buffer, for example: 563
. The current line (or cursor line).
+n n lines after the current line, example: +60
-n n lines before the current line, example: -125
$ The last line in the file buffer.
# The top-of-file image line number.
/pat/ Next line matching the pattern, example: /procedure/
\pat\ Previous line matching pattern, example: \function\
Patterns are an extension of the "Software Tools" scheme where ?=any,
%=start-of-line, $=end-of-line, []=char-class, *=closure, @=literal,
~=case-toggle. The UNIX (tm) set is available via a "set u+" command.
FULL-SCREEN OPERATION -- BLOCK MODE
Block start (or end) is marked by a ^B. Move the cursor to the other
end of the block. The editing keys ^[QWERTYUOPASD], but not RETURN or
DEL, now operate on the block of text. For the "character" operations
the block is a rectangle, for "line" operation the group of lines, for
"delete word" the serial intermediate text. ^Q and ^W save lines or a
character rectangle in block mode; to insert a copy of what you have
saved press ^N. Note that RETURN is "start-of-next-line" after ^B.
CONTEXT EDITOR COMMANDS -- LIST ONLY

RESTRICTIONS
Curlew is a text editor, suitable for editing natural language text,
program source and data, and similar tasks. It is not suitable for
files containing binary data such as executable object programs or
encoded data produced by some applications packages.
Curlew cannot handle files with more than 16,383 lines of information,
nor can it handle files in which any line contains more than 509
characters. All versions of Curlew will refuse to "write" a file once
the 16,383 lines limit has been passed.
Users of files whose sharing attributes allow concurrent write
(modify) access by more than one user (or process) should be aware
that Curlew does not lock (reserve) the file for the duration of the
editing session.
ORIGIN
Curlew was designed and implemented at the Computing Laboratory of
the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle NE1 7RU, England.
