Deferred box prints

Motivation
Rather than have the tick-prefaced messages mixed in with the box-prefaced messages, we could defer the box-printed messages to consolidate them.

Pros: easier to see all the manual steps in one place, less likely to miss something
Cons: decontextualizes the messages so might be harder to debug and/or understand what it happening.

Summary of desired enhancement
Consider whether we want deferred box prints. I'm leaning yes, since the cons above seem to be surmountable with clear messages.
