📝 A way to save and restore desktop icon placement, with support for different screen resolutions and multi-monitor configurations

What is the expected behavior of the proposed feature? What is the scenario this would be used?

The problem this would solve is that desktop icons tend to rearrange themselves whenever the screen resolution or number of monitors changes. When a single laptop is used in different settings (on its own, connected to one or more monitors, or via a remote desktop), icons often don't stay in the same place. Messy, messy, messy!

Consider this scenario:

  1. Eileen Iconlover places all of her desktop icons where she wants them, then clicks "Save Layout" in the PowerToy.
  2. Her evil twin Eyesore Iconhater comes along and moves all the icons around.
  3. Eileen clicks "Restore Layout" in the PowerToy and POOF! the icons go back to where they were in step 1. Eyesore's evil plan is defeated!

Later:

  1. Eileen access her computer remotely via RPC, so her lovely 2-monitor layout rearranges itself to fit into the single virtual display. The desktop icons are semi-randomly placed. Eileen is sad.
  2. Eileen rearranges her desktop icons to their optimal locations for the 1-monitor layout. She clicks "Save Layout" in the PowerToy, which is smart enough to save a separate layout for each screen resolution and multi-monitor configuration.
  3. Eileen ends her RPC session and returns to her desk and its two monitors. As soon as PowerToys senses that she is now in a 2-monitor configuration, it restores Eileen's previously saved 2-monitor destop icon layout. Eileen is happy again!

Later still:

  1. Eileen again accesses her computer remotely via RPC. This time, since she has previously saved a 1-monitor layout at the same resolution, the PowerToy automagically moves the icons to Eileen's 1-monitor layout. Eileen is thrilled!
  2. Eileen is reassured knowing that whether she access her computer using her laptop's LCD or a larger external display or a multi-display setup or over RPC at varying resolutions, whatever desktop icon layout she last saved at that resolution and multi-monitor configuration can be restored with a single click and absolutely no drag.
