[Bug]: After pipelines upgrade from v6 to v8.1 build fails on git checkout #2111

Describe the issue

We have upgraded al go system files using pipeline, but now the build does not work. It fails on github checkout step. See the logs. We are using on prem bc and on prem github runner. Everything was working before the upgrade.

Do we need to change something in the AL-Go-Settings.json to make it work again, or add some github secret?

Also we had to update the GHTOKENWORKFLOW secret today as it was expired and followed documentation on how to set it up. We used classic PAT with only workflow enabled.

We are usign enterprise github accounts with quite strict policy and 2fa security.

From what I can tell, your runners also appear to be self hosted, so this might be worth trying on your side as well:

We ran into the same problem when upgrading from v8.0 to v8.1 on our self hosted GitHub runners and were not able to pinpoint the exact cause. What ultimately fixed it for us was an mix of deleting the repository folder inside the _work directory on the runner machine and updating Git on the runner itself.

I suspect it was related to the Git version, but we did not investigate this any further.

From your last screenshot it also seems that the Initilization and CheckForUpdates stages ran successfully. Both of those also call the Checkout step. I'm guessing they ran on GitHub runners? If so, I suspect the root cause is something on the runner like @frottke mentioned.

From AL-Go version 6.4 to version 8.1 we updated the checkout step from 4.2.2 to 6.0.0 (actions/checkout@v4.2.2...v6.0.0). I noticed the Readme mentions something about requiring the minimum version of the actions runner to be v2.329.0. Might be worth it to try and update the actions runner version as well.

looks like this step is running in the github runner, so the highest probability is that the local runner has something screwed up for the updated checkout stage

btw meanwhile i have reverted the upgrade of pipelines and it works now, so the theory with the updated GHTOKENWORKFLOW secret is denied

also I dont get why the cache should cause issues with the updated pipeline and not with the old pipeline, but will try to clean it up when we get the new window for the pipeline upgrade..
