Have you considered using a perceptually uniform color mapping, via for example the Viridis or the cubehelix color mapping, or by using HSLuv(≠HSL), or HPLuv? This would make it a lot easier to recognize patterns in any given heat map.

I have not considered it. Can you provide an implementation/patch?
