First of all, thanks for your script. It worked great before 10.12 (or thereabouts), but now it does not work when external speakers are connected.

The stupid startup sound is loud, obnoxious, and frustrating.

Is there any solution (besides never rebooting, unplugging speakers, etc.)..?

Dear @JeffStarr, thank you for your post. Unfortunately, this is a known limitation of the script due to how sound devices are accessible through AppleScript. So far I haven't been able to find a solution that does not require some sort of hacking, which is against the philosophy of this little script.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to hear that you seek to implement a hack-free solution with your script, but at this point I would be willing to pay for any solution, hack or otherwise. Hopefully you or someone out there cares enough to provide a fix for the extremely loud, annoying, brand-damaging Apple/Mac startup sound.
