Burke RA, Molina M, Cox JE, Osher LJ, Piccolo MC. Stable carbon isotope ratio and composition of microbial fatty acids in tropical soils. J Environ Qual. 2003 Jan-Feb;32(1):198-206. doi: 10.2134/jeq2003.1980. PMID: 12549559.
Description and purpose
This paper investigates the effects of soil type (PC1) (forest and sugarcane) and land use on soil microbial community structure (PC2) and how much original forest vegetation derived SOM contributes to ecosystems. This is done by analyzing soil phospholipid fatty acid profiles (PLFA) and stable carbon isotope ratios as indicators of microbial activity, which yields information about the SOM cycling rate. Researchers use PCA, principal component analysis, to analyze and draw conclusions from findings.

Using the of_variable list (here)[https://github.com/ktoddbrown/SoilDRaH/blob/main/data/semantics/SoilDRaHVocabulary_of_variable.csv] we expect to use the following variables:
- citation
- region
- land_use
- soil_class
- stand_age
- site_name
- elevation
- stem_density
