Merge the same and adjacent formats

To get A.docx, we do:

1. Type 123456 in a formula.
2. Bold 123456.
3. Type abc betweem 3 and 4.

\[\mathbf{123}\mathbf{abc}\mathbf{456}\]

The output is redundant. What we expect is

\[\mathbf{123abc456}\]

Perhaps the redundancy is caused by Word. Could pandoc merge the same and adjacent formats?

The conversion of this XML to TeX is done by jgm/texmath so any changes would need to be made there. In principle, we could merge as you suggest.
