username string too long with Microsoft account on java8 image

Hi. I'm getting the following error when attempting to join the server from a MultiMC launcher using a Microsoft account.

Internal Exception: io.netty.handler.codec.DecoderException: java.io.IOException: The received string length is longer than maximum allowed

From what I've researched, this is commonly related to a username being longer than 16 characters. But most of the posts were from years ago, pre-Microsoft. I've confirmed that my profile name is 9 characters. I'm wondering if it is passing through my email login address instead of short minecraft profile name? I've not been able to get that detail in the logs.

I have recreated the problem on 1.7.10, 1.8.9, 1.10.2. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to look?

After trying from a friend's computer, I realized that I was using an old version of MultiMC on the client side and it was not pulling through the Profile info from the Microsoft account. Problem solved after updating MultiMC.
