When running this command

npx cap run android   

I get this error:

If I run it in android studio, it works fine.

for using jdk 21 you need to use gradle 8.4, which is not officially supported for android development yet
for android development jdk 17 is recommended

Here is my process incase anyone else needs help. jdk 17 can be found here

I had multiple java versions installed

usr/libexec/java_home -V

Matching Java Virtual Machines (3):
    21.0.1 (x86_64) "Oracle Corporation" - "Java SE 21.0.1" /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk-21.0.1.jdk/Contents/Home
    17.0.9 (x86_64) "Oracle Corporation" - "Java SE 17.0.9" /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk-17.0.9.jdk/Contents/Home
    15.0.1 (x86_64) "Oracle Corporation" - "Java SE 15.0.1" /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk-15.0.1.jdk/Contents/Home

To change the default version that your shell uses you can add this to .zshrc or .bash_profile. I'm on a mac so for me it was .zshrc

open ~/.zshrc

Add in this:

# set java version
export JAVA_HOME=`/usr/libexec/java_home -v 17`

Save and reload terminal

Verify like this:

java -version
