How to receive data-only message notification when the app is closed/killed in Android?

I don't received any message notification when my application is closed/killed in my setBackgroundMessageHandler method.

I'm using @react-native-firebase/messaging: ^10.4.1. I'm receiving all notification, except when app is killed. I have send index.js, AndroidManifest.xml, package.json

what exact JSON do you send via the FCM REST API? (excluding device tokens / API tokens, but everything else)? What did adb logcat say? What about https://dontkillmyapp.com ?

In general, sadly, data-only notifications are not reliable in this exact case (killed / closed) for power management reasons. For the killed / closed case the most reliable way is to send an actual "notification" block in the JSON and let the SDKs post a notification. At that point if the user interacts with it your code will get control again

This my JSON. I can use "notification" block, but I need to do a grouping and other custom behavior, that I implemented handlers with Notifee. Do you know if it possible to implement it using "notification" block? I have faced with the duplicated messages issue using "notification" block of JSON.

If you use a notification block, you will need to be very careful to determine what the app state is so that you do not post two notifications, definitely. The firebase documentation contains a table that shows in what app states it posts what types of notifications (or does not post, for some app states). For the ones the SDK doesn't post notifications, your app will have control and you can do the grouping etc that you want

For the other notifications I'm not sure what the full features of the notifications are (grouping etc), I assume firebase messaging docs will have information on that?

I wish this was easier, that data only messages were 100% reliable but there is nothing we can do unfortunately. This is a very difficult area of app design / development.
