Cannot install on any platform without failure to create USR/BIN and related files and folders #8628
-
I'm on day 9 trying to get this software installed. I don't know much of anything about Linux or dockers or anything non-Microsoft, but I can manage to follow directions, logic my way through things, and troubleshoot. But I'm completely at a loss here. I first wanted to host this on my OpenMediaVault server, so I installed Compose, followed every step from every possible angle, and every time I tried to get InvenTree itself (worker and server) installed, it fails with the 500-server error about being unable to create the USR folders and files, and I would have an amalgamation of installed and working processes (Redis, Postgres, Caddy) but a failed and constantly trying to start Inventree worker and server. I tried every possible solution I could find and no difference. I installed Portainer and tried again with the exact same results. I moved from my OMV server to my local laptop and installed VirtualBox and Ubuntu 20.04lts and Debian 11, and no matter what, during the single line installs there would be failures at the same place during install, being unable to create the USR and related folders and files. I installed the Win11 WSL Ubuntu 20.04lts environment and ran the single-line installer, and again, I get the exact same issue and can never get InvenTree working to even log in. On my OMV server, it's literally got the SMB/CIFS shares and MiniDLNA and Compose setup with nothing else, so there's nothing to interfere. On my Windows system, I do have an antivirus software, but even disabled the problem persists. I have installed and uninstalled and cleaned everything up probably a hundred times now, and I'm frankly frustrated. That's 6 or more hours every day for the last 9 days trying to get this running, and I'm at a loss. I am simply trying to install it and want to be able to remote into it so I can keep track of bobbles I make then giveaway. It'll be so underused it'll be sad, but it's free, and being old and retired and on a fixed income, free is the only price I can afford. I've even reached the point where I'm willing to pay for hosting if I can get this thing to work, but if I can't get it to work in any of these local environments I can't imagine what a nightmare it would be to get working on a web server. I'm not a coder, scripter, or knowledgeable in Linux distros. I really just want to press a button and make it work, but I know more now about Linux that I ever wanted, and like it even less. But since this is the only way to run InvenTree, I need help. Assume I'm a complete moron (because in this I more-or-less am), and walk me through every single step. On the Deployment pages they start in the middle and jump around, and it's often hard to tell if I'm supposed to have done something or they're just referring to how the script is working. I'm sorry if that's annoying, but I have other hobbies I prefer over scripting-heavy OS's. I actually LOATHE coding, was not mentally designed for the tedium. So please be cognizant of this if you can/want to help. And yes, I could give you every single step I tried, and it would be 100-times longer than this already is, so let's just start from scratch and hope I can finally get it installed and understand it enough that I could recreate it when I decide to move it to whatever hosting platform it's going to wind up on. Thanks for your time, consideration, and help! |

SWEET!!!! So, I found this forum post: #6109 In it, user dspmathguru gives a solution:
I tried these steps and BAM! InvenTree is FINALLY up and running in my WLM environment! I almost cried! You're a genius DSPMATHGURU!!! So, with that said - how does this fix translate to a Compose File installation? What should I be putting into my FILE script, or the VARIABLE section of the script, or both? Clearly, the same issue is effecting all my installs through all environments, so how do I make it work over on my OMV server using Compose? Also, if I take the time to start modifying this test install on my Win11 machine that is now working setup with what and how I want, is there any way to transfer those changes to my permanent solution? I really need to get started on this solution ASAP. Thanks for any help. And again, a HUGE thanks and shout-out to DSPMATHGURU!!! I would have NEVER figured that out! |

As stated in my "Answer", I still need help translating a solution that worked in Ubuntu to making the same thing happen in a Docker file, because the exact same thing happens no matter how or where it's installed. So a fix for the Docker script would be wonderful! Thanks! |
