Configuring a Data Server

Hello, I'm interested in configuring a Data Server for custom, local data.

I have done this in the past, and when I searched around, I found some old tutorials from around 2014-2016 -- but I wasn't able to find any current documentation. So:

1. Is it still possible to set up a custom data registry url to add my own local files to the "Available Datasets" dialog under File -> Load From Server?
2. Is there any up-to-date documentation of how to structure these files?

Yes you may setup a custom registry, and the old tutorials should still be valid. If you point me to one I can be sure. There is no more recent documentation, because nothing has changed.

For the next major release we are moving our own files to a track hub based scheme (https://genome.ucsc.edu/goldenpath/help/hubQuickStart.html). But if you prefer the old XML format is still supported for backward compatibility.

I see, that is interesting. Will it be possible to use a custom track hub, then, and is it possible to do this now, or are you saying this will become possible only in the next release? Do you have an ETA for that?

Yes it will be possible to use a custom track hub. You can do this now with the "development snapshot" build https://igv.org/doc/desktop/#DownloadSnapshot/. We will upgrade this to a pre-release soon. You load the hub by URL, or if using a custom genome include the hub in the genome json. A big advantage of course is you can use the hub at UCSC as well.
