How to add timeouts to individual test cases

The GS Autograder Best Practices article suggests:

Include timeouts for individual test executions to limit the maximum time each individual test case can take.

Anyone have a simple example of how to implement this, say, in the GS Python autograder example? Presumably if a test case times out, the desired result is that the test is recorded as failing.
