Request: Add ".co" to Eddystone-URL Table #241
Comments
It's used so much. I don't see why either |
That's very interesting. Personally I use eddystone-UID which does not have a limitation on the URL. As a workaround, you could try a URL shortener like bit.ly |
Using UID's is useful but then requires a dedicated app which defeats
purpose of allowing more generic and arguably more ubiquitous apps such as
the physical web to read URL and associated header data.
Using URL shortners generates uncertainty and lowers trust as you do not
really know what you are clicking into.

From what I recall, using a URL shortener with eddystone-URL, Google Nearby will resolve the shortened URL and show the full link in the notification. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I may be getting URL and UID mixed up here. I know that UID works in this way. As for needing a dedicated app for UID, I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about iPhone needing an app to see the notification? For UID, the notification can be updated from Google beacon dashboard once the beacons namespace and instance ID has been registered. In fact, you could even use Google beacon tools to update the attachment from your phone. |
“using a URL shortener with eddystone-URL, Google Nearby will resolve the shortened URL and show the full link in the notification.” That has been my experience when using eddystone URL with an url shortner. |
I am left a little baffled as to why ".co" was never considered worthy at the very start to be added to the standard list. That means all the ".co", ".co.uk", "co.nz", "co.za" etc etc lose out on 3 precious byte spaces. Please, could you add this?
