Etymology of "naga" - Heroes of Might and Magic 3?

I'm curious, did the authors of the naga crate perhaps play Heroes of Might and Magic 3 ("HoMM3")? There is a very powerful unit called Naga / Naga Queen - every time I see "naga" in my Rust code I think about HoMM3 - originating in Indian lore

Or is naga an acronym for something?
