Steps to reproduce

  1. Create a Matrix Account on element.io via Social Login
  2. Try to use ElemenX

Outcome

What did you expect?

I expected to be abled to use my element.io/ matrix.org account in the element x application.

What happened instead?

Element X asks me to enter a Username and Password. However my User does not HAVE a password.
I also would totaly be fine to CREATE a password for my user and move away from social login (my Account uses GitHub Social Login) - however I was not abled to find an option to set a Password.

Therefore I am not calling this a feature request, but a BUG! (even though I tecnically am requestiong the Social Login)
I simply cannot login. - which should defenetly be possible.

The classic Element App does support it, so for now I will have to keep using THAT

  1. Element X supports plain old username/password or social logins via matrix-authentication service
  2. matrix.org implements social logins via legacy SSO which is not supported by EX and never will be.

You have 2 options:

  1. create a password for your matrix user (by using the password forgotten functiinality), which you can use in EX
  2. wait until February 10, when matrix.org will be switching to the new-style authentication: https://matrix.org/blog/2025/01/06/authentication-changes/

I just ran in to this. I couldn't use the forgot password functionality because I didn't have an email address set up.

So, the full sequence is:

  1. Log in on the web with SSO
  2. Add an email address to your account
  3. Authorise the email address
  4. Sign out
  5. Use the forgotten password flow
  6. Sign in again
  7. Then sign in on mobile
