I tried to build both using the tarball and cloning the rep. Got stuck in this error both times. Tried running with sudo too, but no dice. I'm on MX Linux 17 (Debian).

This is the output for ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr. It seems to work okay. As in the title, when I run make I get make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

You need to install i3ipc-glib and make sure pkg-config can find it. i3ipc-glib's make install should do the trick.

On second look it looks like you do have i3ipc-glib but it's too old (v0.3.1).
