You can limit what types of files can be uploaded to an asset folder through an asset field type but the same limitations do not exist when a user uploads a file directly into an asset folder. While I realize that I can lock a user out of the assets section altogether, there are times when it is beneficial for them to be able to upload files here. Therefore, it would be nice to limit file types for each asset folder in the same manner in which we limit file types for an asset field type.
