When adding an event date filter, the German (and possibly other) translation overflows.

this is not really a bug with c:geo but with the german translation. In english the string is short enough, so no need for a general change. If languages don't find a short version they should resort to some other option.

In my opinion the actual problem is that long text strings aren't suitable as labels for such inputs. Even "past" could be a problem on smaller screens.
