Message Tracker API

This a proposed implementation of API following the requirements describeb in "test_assignment_en.pdf"

  1. Submit a message to a defined recipient, identified with some identifier, e.g. email-address, phone-number, user name or similar.
  2. Fetch new messages (meaning the service must know what has already been fetched).
  3. Delete a single message.
  4. Delete multiple messages.
  5. Fetch messages (including previously fetched) ordered by time, according to start and stop index.

Fast-API & sqlite is used to implement those requirements. Fast-API has a good design and tremondous amount of utilities to design good API and Sqlite is a simple file database that does not need a server to run, there easy to work with and share with other without the need to have a server running in the background.

How to run

CASE 1: You want to use the current project dependencies
This project uses python v. 3.9 in order for case 1 to work use system with python 3.9 installed otherwise use case 2 or case 3
  • Install pipenv
> pip install pipenv

For linux -> sudo apt install pipenv

  • in the current folder: message-tracker-api
> pipenv sync
> pipenv shell
> uvicorn main:app --reload

if you wan to use a different port & number of workers use:

> uvicorn main:app --port 8001 --workers 5 --reload
CASE 2: Case 1 does not work

Sometimes depending on system and how your python env is setup, use the project Pipfile.Lock may not work.

  • Install pipenv
> pip install pipenv

For linux -> sudo apt install pipenv

  • Remove Pipfile & Pipfile.Lock
> sudo rm -f Pipfile
> sudo rm -f Pipfile.Lock

and then :

> pipenv shell
> pipenv install fastapi uvicorn SQLAlchemy pytest httpx
> uvicorn main:app --reload
CASE 3: Use docker compose (version without hyphen between docker and compose)
docker compose up -d

Test:

in this folder run: pytest simple_test.py
