While having HA pfSense firewalls is ideal for hit-less upgrades and extra redundancy, it is also overkill for a home network. It adds additional complexity, maintenance needs, and uses more power during normal operation. Maintenance windows for occasional upgrades and backup/restore are enough.

Since both UPSes currently in use are on the same circuit, having two UPSes provides little value. The only real value it does provide is in case of one UPS failure. Since one UPS can power all the devices sufficiently, the smaller UPS should be removed to reduce maintenance/replacement needs and make it simpler to monitor overall power consumption.

Steps

  • Remove secondary pfSense firewall and Mikrotik WAN router
  • Remove secondary UPS (power all devices with one UPS)
